Default Help with transmission problem?

I have a 2002 jaguar x type automatic with about 90 some thousand miles on it. Yesterday when I got of the highway, I pulled into McDonalds and all of a sudden the car wouldn't shift into second. From there on my transmission seems like it's stuck in first gear. I tried manually shifting, but nothing different happened.

I drove home from there at about 15 miles an hour and tried to keep the RPM below 3 so I could basically only go about 10 mph. At times, I would speed up to about 20-25mph and pop it into neutral, then when the car coasted to about 5-10mph I would press the gas but the car would only start to accelerate once the RPM's hit the 3 mark. But from a dead stop the car accelerates just fine up until it's time to switch gears, it's just when the car is already in motion it seems as though I need to get the RPM's at 3-4 before the car accelerates more.

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I'm taking the car to the shop Friday to get a bunch of things fixed but if this is an easy fix then I would like to do it myself. I would also like to add that I bought the car used when it had 32,000 and the tranny was replaced by the previous owner at approx. 30000 miles so I really hope the tranny is not the issue here. There are also no gear box fault codes or low transmission fluid warnings on the instrument display. Can this be the drive shafts or transfer case that is the problem here?

The Jaguar X-Type, Mazda, VW, Range Rover all use the JATCO JF506E.

The VW 09A JATCO JF506E gearbox has an issue with the N92 valve (and some other valves). The trans will not shift out of first because the valve is stuck closed. It needs to OPEN to shift to 2nd and it is not closed again until 4th gear is needed so until a high enough speed is reached to get to 4th, you will NOT shift out of first. I repair more of these VWs because there are alot more of these. Maybe the VW fluid is different and causes the sticking valves??????

The TCM might NOT flag an electrical fault because the valve is in the circuit and reads fine. The valve becomes mechanically stuck!!!!!!

There are 3 valves that shift all 5 speeds and the other 6 valves are for shift quality (9 total).

There are other reasons for the fault but it could be a stuck valve.

You might check the fluid level, TCM DTCs etc.

Solenoid, Sensor… : Automatic, Standard Transmission and Transfer Case Rebuild Kits, Cobra Transmission Parts 1-800-293-1848

Here is a good place to get the solenoids.

The actuator in the back of the gearbox is known to crack and not compress the clutches so it could be a failed part.

A good trans shop should be able to diagnose.
