Default wheel bearing or differential or ...

I am hearing a whirring sound that seems to be coming from the back, and I think the left side, but it might just be the back. The whirring arrives pretty much at 30 mph but goes away around 70 mph. The car does seem noisier from 0 to 70 overall. I have driven a car with bad bearings before, but it was louder than this. I checked for play in the rear wheels after jacking the rear up, but could not find any. The whirring occurs when in neutral, so I think its a bearing, but could this be in the differential, or somewhere else?

Thanks to everyone who contributes here!

indi4ever, I would say to first look at the carrier bearing in the rear drive shaft. This is normally the culprit for a noise like this. Get yourself a grease gun with a needle attachment. You are going to want to use Termaline grease. Stick the needle into the carrier bearing (located center of the car, under the front seat backs on outside of car). You will want to squirt in a little bit of grease in 3-4 spots evenly spaced around the bearing. Take the car out for a drive afterwards and see if your noise has changed. A greasing will buy you some time. Granted, you will still need to replace this bearing in the near future. But, a greasing will get you another year or so.

If you still have the noise, then let us know and we can take things from there.

Good call. Didn't even think about that part. This why I love this forum!

Thanks.

The speed range is a tell tale sign it's the carrier bearing (most likely).

Update! I didn't have a grease gun or needle and the one I ordered came with a broken trigger, so rather than reorder, I just ordered the center bearing anyway. I have a shop that said they would replace it for $75, so I just decided to let them do it. Waiting to get the car back as he was too full the last few days.

Driveshaft bearing (or joint) problems usually vary with power/load, as well as speed, if that’s any help in your diagnosis.
