Default Rear Wheel Bearing

I did my pre-winter storage oil change today and my mechanic noticed excess play in one of the rear wheels, indicating a wheel bearing issue. My 2001 only has 54k on the clock. Has anyone experienced this problem and replaced the bearing? He gave me a quote of $300.

Three months ago I had a rear wheel bearing replaced. The kit was $178 and the labor $301.32. These prices are from an independent with reasonable labor rates, about $75 per hour. It is my understanding that replacing the rear wheel bearings is a bear and if your quote doesn't increase it is a decent price.
