Default Wheel and Noise -- Suggestions Needed

Hello Fellow Car Nuts,

I’m new to the forum, however, I’ve used similar sites for previous vehicles. This type of forum is an awesome resource, and I appreciate any type of help you’ll provide.

Well, I just purchased a ’03 X-Type 2.5, Manual, w/ 15k miles. The car runs great so far. The only issue I’ve noticed is when I am approaching 60mph, I get some road noise. The noise isn’t associated with a vibration, but more like a very faint “womp womp.” Maybe the AWD system, or drive shaft?

I thought maybe it was the wheel tire setup. The wheels are factory, however, the tires are some generic all season replacements. I planned on upgrading the wheel tire combo anyways, so I purchased some 18” MB wheels/ Yokahama All Seasons from discount tire. I should be receiving them mid week, due to them being shipped from Dallas. The wheel choice was not due to price. They were the most clean looking wheel I found on the site, and by chance, happened to be the cheapest ($115.00 on sale). The Yokahama tires were more expensive than the wheels ($170.00). Total I paid $1100 for the setup, which seems extremely reasonable. Hopefully the wheels don’t fall apart. But I think they’ll give the look that I’m hoping for.

I’m looking for a real clean look, not “gangstafied.” Any suggestions on other visual improvements would be great. I’m currently thinking about new grille, clear side markers, and getting a body kit this summer. I’m not sure about window tinting. Let me know what you’ll think.

Adam

The tires that are on it are Continental "ContiTouring" or something along those lines. Not sure if they'restock or not. They just looked generic. Any ideas about the road noise?

Nice. They look like I had hoped. My vehicle isn't lowered. How do you think they'll look without the drop? What has your experience been with them?

They look great when lowered, they look good when not.

Here are some Pre-Lowing pics.

Put the wheels on today..... road noise is gone! The wheel/tire combo made the car sit up a lot higher, so I am goingto order some springs ASAP. Will I need to order anything else along with the springs? I am thinking Eibach ProKit. Anyone have any better setups in mind?

Guys,

I purchased by 03 X Type 2.5 last week. The car has 4 new tires. My question is in regards to road noise with the tires. As i reach 60 mph, it becomes somewhatnoticeable. Do you think this is b/c of the new tires? I don't feel any kind of vibration at all, just road noise. At lower speeds nothing, over 65 it goes away.

Also, is it normal for Jags to have louder engine noise at high speeds, around 70-75 mphor so? The RPMs are under 3, however, it sounds like there is more noise than my Saab 9-3. Just want to make sure nothing is wrong with the enginer/tranny..

Hello,

My car at 60-80 mph islouder than Iexpected. It seems really smooth and quiet during city driving (35-40 mph), and gets progressively louder as I approachthe speeds you mentioned. I've read many reviewsby reputable car critics, andfound this to be normal forX-Type. However, I was gettingexcessivenoisedue to the stocktires.

Maybe both of our trans/engine's are screwed, or this is natural. My car has 15,700 miles on it, and it does it also. Don't be too alarmed.

Hey Adam,

How much did you pay for yours? I got mine for 14,999 with 37K miles, auto.

I have read on some user reviews, andpeople have noted that engine is louder at higher speeds. At low speed, can't even notice it is on. I am just trying to make sure all is well with the car.

Are u planning on taking your car to dealer to see if all TSBs have been completed on it. I noticed yours is a 2003, so the manufacturer warranty is almost out. Did you get an extended warranty?

I paid $16,000 for mine at a local dealership. They wanted $18,500, however, my father knows the guy who owns it, so they hookedus up with a reasonable deal. I am not really worried about it because their is a great mechanic in townwho is known for his work with Euro's.Luckily Ican still mooch off the parents ifanything happens .

I just can't believe thatI'm driving this kickass vehicle which had a pricetagequivalent to a new Nissan Sentra. I'll take theJag!

Still got the effing tire noise at 60 mph. I hoping it goes away, as the tires wore out.
