They'll fit and you'll have a mile of room between the tire and fender lip with 225/45s. You may start to get inner clearance problems if you want to fit wider tires.

thanks exexpat, will 225's look stretched or will they look like normal tires?

225 on a 7.5" wide wheel is not going to be stretched at all. A noticeable stretch would be something like a 205 or a 195 width tire on a 7.5 wheel.

The whole point of stretched tires is to be able to clear the widest wheel possible so in your case... Please dont try and stretch because it will be pointless, the 7.5s will have miles of clearance.

I would even say they are a hair over square (in general I think 205/215 is better looking on a 7.5", but that is my preference and the X-Type should have at least 225 section width).

I'm pretty sure my factory BBS Melbournes are 7.5" and they came with 225/40/18, so it should look about like every other car with 225/40/18s out there.
