will stype steering wheel fit xtype?
#2
JK,
The 2002 wheels look the same but are not. Some of the loaded X-types came with wood/leather wheels. Mine is an 02, not loaded, and it has a square column post, no puller required, to attach to the wheel. Most S-type and other X-type wheels use the type that have tapered splines to mount wheel. Other differences include the location where the wires go through the wheel.
If you are adventurous and some skill you CAN retrofit the wheel. I purchased an x-type wood/leather wheel off e-bay and it had the splines. However, the hole in the wheel with the splines fits over the square post on my column. Use some JB-WELD and pack the hole around the square on the wheel. Be sure to put tape on the bottom of the hole. The JB-weld will make an adapter for your wheel. Be sure to mix it well and allow it to fully cure. Also both surfaces need to be extremely clean. You will need to dremil out the casting on the wheel to fit the wires through proper location. I had to create this hole myself.
BE SURE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY and allow time for the air bag module to drain it's stored charge BEFORE disconnecting wheel air bag.
As long as you DO NOT try to turn the wheels without power steering pump running the JB-WELD will hold.
If you do not feel safe with this method, do the jb-weld, pull the wheel, and now you have a positive mold of the adapter you will need for a machine shop to make one from steel.
Try this at your own RISK!
