Windshield fogs up, then clears up

I have a 02 x-type with 124K and have had the air blend door fixed twice now. I know this isn’t an air blend door problem, since it is in the Open position, and has not been switched off defrost since the dealer "fixed" the blend door. They told me it's in the open position, and it has stayed that way and will stay that was permanently (my setting is to defrost). Lately, when I get in the cars windshield fogs up, they clears up in 30-40 seconds. It has rained, but the car mats are not wet etc. The black exterior trim piece that lies over the base of the windshield has lifted up, so maybe water is getting down there. I also have a rare smell, it’s a musty sour smell that comes through the vents then goes away. I had to put in an air freshener to prevent the smell as often. Why is the car fogging up then going away all of a sudden? Any suggestions?
