X-type all wheel drive
Had to replace the right front drive shaft on my 2003 Xtype 2.5l auto trans. Well, wouldn't you know, when I tried to knock out the shaft the extention shaft popped out of the transfer case. Spilled out about a pint of reddish colored oil. The owners manual does not specify any type or quantity for the transmission, or front and rear transfer cases. What do I do now? Any suggestions? What type of lubricant goes in there? How do you add it in? Is the front transfer case part of the auto trans or is it a separate item? This is my daily driver and I need to get it back on line asap.

lunatic fringe, since the fluid is red, that would be tranny fluid, not gear lube (should be a greyish color). So, to add tranny fluid, you will need to go to the drivers side of the car and look down on the side of the tranny. There will be a fill plug there. What you will need to do is to get a quart or so of tranny fluid and then add it in via that fill hole. But, keep in mind that you need to have the motor running and the car in gear and fill the fluid up to the botom of the hole. Then you can reinstall the fill plug and all will be good.

Here is the procedure to properly fill the X-Type transmission.
I need to caution here, as you said the link shaft came out of the transfer box. If the link shaft itself came out more than 200mm, it is likely the internal seal BETWEEN the transmission and transfer case was damaged. If that happens, the two fluids come together in each. Unfortunately that leads to failure of both. Proper removal of the link shaft so no damage occurs, is to remove the transfer box from the car with the shaft in it. A lock ring is removed from the transmission side so the shaft can be withdrawn without damage to the seal.
If the link shaft did not come out more than 200mm, you are probably OK.
Good luck!
