X-Type ECM swap?

X-Type ECM swap?
hi.
Girlfriend's son recently bought 2003(2?) X-type. Drove it home and soon after got the "Trans Failure" display, stuck in "P", and no start.
He's checked grounds, swapped TCM, finally got it to a shop that declared bad grounding "coming out of the ECM".
He's being told the ECM "cannot" be changed because it's coded to the VIN. At worse I figure the VIN would need to be configured into the swap ECM. (and yes, I know this can still be a pretty ugly "at worse")
Can anyone confirm or offer ideas on swapping the ECM?
Thanks,
Lowell
