Default X Type 'rumbling' noise when starting

All,

I am looking to see if anyone has any opinions on my experience when starting my car.

When I turn the key for start, 9 times out of 10 it makes some form of hunting / rattling / mechanical noise which is louder than normal engine idling. It does this for approximately a whole second before it stops and engine idles as normal.

I have been told that this may be something to do with it being low on il at some point...??? Although I have had the car from brand new, everything else runs fine and it has been doing this since approximately 2 years after buying and has always done it since. Very occasionally - it doesn't manifest.

I once asked the dealers about it and they advised me that cannot replicate the noise or find anything related.

Any comments / advice please? Sometimes I wonder if it is to do with air con and fans, but it does sound like something in the engine itself.

Comments and thoughts appreciated.

Many thanks,

Chumbers

Engine noises are extremely difficult to describe and consequently to pinpoint.

The XK8/XKR section has had several threads on engine noises and the most successful replies have been when an audio/video clip has been posted.

If you can post a clip, there's a much higher chance of someone here recognising the rumbling sound.

Hi guys,

I have kind of figured this noise issue out. I have been told by an old mechanic friend that it sounds like noisy tappets on starting, and that the lifters are probably not working as it should.

Does anyone have this experience, or know of anyone who has had and it's implications? From my understanding, this could have happened from low oil at one stage, but only ever manifests itself sometimes when starting, not whilst running.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

My advise is to listen for it and try to identify where it's coming from.

Old back yard trick: get a long handled screw driver and put the handle end against your ear. Then touch the other end to any place where you suspect you've hear a noise. Works just like a stethoscope and you'll really hear what's happening right under the end.

Hi Billsjag,

Is that for approximately a whole minute - seems like a long time. Mine seems to make rumbling noise for about 1-3 seconds when starting. I figured it has something to do with the oil being pumped to tappet level and lifters being noisy before the oil gets there.

I am planning of an oil change to see if it improves at all.

Please keep me posted if you find anything.

Cheers
