Is your car a manual by any chance and sounds like it's grinding? If so, there's an excellent possibility that clutch goo is binding the drive gear. I was ready to replace my starter; found info in these forums and removed my starter and cleaned it; been working like new ever since! It's even a relatively simple job. Cheers!

That's my super- technical name for the dust and residue that comes off your clutch as it wears, and it all seems to accumulate on the shaft for the drive gear. It will make perfect sense when you get the starter out. I could barely pry the gear up and down on mine; just used a bit of brake cleaner and judicious use of compressed air, good as new. I gather it's pretty common. Good luck!
