Help good people, have got a bit of a dilemma. I currently have an immaculate 2005,fairly rare manual X type Sovereign which still runs lovely with just under 90k miles on the clock. However my head has been turned by an XF that's for sale locally at a good price. It's a 2010 portfolio S with only 60k miles on it and looks and drives superb.Don't know what to do ,do I stick with the X for a while longer until something major goes wrong or twist now whilst she is still running sweet .? When I looked at the XF I was blown away ,especially with the interior as it has every available option including camera, heated and cooled seats ,boot spoiler , rear electric sun blind , etc, etc. But then this morning I went outside and noticed just what wonderful condition my old X is still in ! I only have room for one as my daily driver and do like to travel a fair bit on holidays in the summer and the X has never let me down but I wonder if it might be time to upgrade .HELP!
Blues boy, 2 ways to look at this: The first is YOLO. Just buy it and enjoy without looking back. I was in a similar situation (I was going from X-Type to XJ). In my case, it was a bit more straight forward as I made a promise to myself as a kid that I WOULD!!!!!! own an XJ in my life. I will say that the newer Jags ride much better than the X-Type did. But, you are also going up in classes of cars. So, that would be expected.
The second way to look at it is to first look at what the price difference is between the two cars and figure out at my current wage, how many hours is this car going to cost me. Now, do you see yourself getting the same number of hours of pleasure driving the car. Some may say that you need to take the hours of pleasure and multiply by a certain amount as you are not necessarily "making money" during that time. You can toss in some "factor" for knowing what you have with the X-Type in the way of quality and reliability where the XF will be a question mark. Granted, I would do some looking around in the XF section and see what others are experiencing. Being a 2010, you are going to have the 4.2L engine if you get a petrol engine. The issues with them are well documented and doing a little bit of preventative maintenance could put the XF on par with the X-Type. But, now you are looking at a bit more in the way of cost.
I will sum it up this way: Make a decision and do not look back. That is the past and do not let it bother you.
I am the wrong guy to answer your question - or am I?
Just look at the list of the Jags I have and my answer is clear: Just buy it and keep the X-Type as well.
It's a 2010 XF, which would probably still make it a Ford-XF and not a Tata-XF.
And I would rather have a Ford-Jag.
On the other hand: The XF does not have quad-headlights, which is definitely a minus for me - A Jag needs to have quad-headlights - I even bought quad-headlights for my XJS to swap the fishtanks in there.
I have both a Xf and a X-type the xf go for one 2014 to 2015 with the updated timing chains and guides ,both mine run perfect, X-type has 260,000 miles ,my Xf has 148,000 miles ,and you can't feel bumps in the road
Well, it looks like I will be keeping the X for the time being. Why ?
Firstly, I was surprised by the amount of grief my family gave me about not selling it and reminding me about the amount of time ,work and yes money I have put into getting her to the conditions she's in. Secondly , I took her for a run round the lanes where I live today and came back with a smile on my face at how well the AWD grips and just how lovely it still is to drive with it's 3.0 V6 and manual box. Thirdly, when I parked up I looked back and thought how pretty the classic Jaguar shape still is.
So there you are, The XF dream will have to wait a little longer because me and the X type are not yet through .
