Angry xtype wont go above 75 mph????

Hi im new to the site and im looking for answers please.

I have had my xtype 2.5 petrol petrol for a while now and it has suddenly developed a problem!

The engine management light has come on after i was doing around 75 mph and the whole car juddered and an immediate loss of power so i came off the accelerator and back on and now it will not go above that speed, the car runs fine otherwise with no faults and no revving limitations in any gear, only at 75mph.

I have had the codes read and it said bank 1 & 2 o2 sensors which i have had replaced and it was ok for a day or so then back to the limitation of 75mph.

I can accelerate hard in every gear at high revs right up until 75mph then the judder and loss of power, i can hold it at 75 and its fine and the power always come back when i go back under 75.

If anyone has any suggestion i would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

Lee

If you shift down while at 75 does it still lose power? And are you getting any check engine light codes from the engine right now?

Also, trying to figure out if this is something that is happening exactly at 75 or around 75 is very important because you may have an o2 sensor that is grounding or shorting at around 75 due to the increased wind under the car. To figure this out, use your cruise control and play around to see if it's happening EXACTLY at 75.

Sounding like the speed limiter in the ECU has developed a problem and instead of limiting the speed to 144 mph, it is controlling it at about half that. I'm placing money on the ECU. But, lets see what becomes of this.

Thanx for the suggestion's, when i shift down it still looses power until i go under that speed and its around the 75 mph mark not exactly but no less than, the latest code read suggests a few options mainly ECU and mass air flow or exhaust.

Do you think it is worth fixing or maybe time to move on?

Cheers

If the car is running fine except for the fact that it can't go over 75, I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet. You have a perfectly running car except for one issue.

If you are getting ECU codes, I would also go with Thermos suggestion that the ecu is limiting the speed at the wrong speed. If you think about it, 75x2 is 150 which is very close to 144 which is the factory limited speed. The ecu may have blown a resistor so it now has half the resistance and thus its limiting it at half the speed... I'm just spit balling though

lwaters, I would say to take the car to a shop, explain to them what is going on and see what they say. A used ECU is around $300 USD, can be fixed for around $150 USD as I recall (look on e-bay for both). Then add in another $200 for shop services and for relatively cheap, you can get your car fixed. Granted, the shop will be able to put their computer on to your car and tell you a lot more about what is going on.

check your vin, but this ecu seems close: 03 JAGUAR X TYPE Engine Brain Box Elec Cont Unit (ECU) 6-152 (2.5L, V6) 10044 | eBay

Also, check car-part.com and the name of the part is "computer box engine"

Hello ,
I just had this same prob with my 05 2.0D, Was coming home from work and the Car juddered and lost complete power and was staying around 50-60 MPH,( you can look my post up and see the comments on it if you wish )

I Pulled over and turned the Engine off left if for 5 min , Started it back up and is all normal.

I read up on the Issue Quite a bit and my car went into "Limp Mode"
People say it could be the Fuel injectors on the way out ( hence why im saving money )

I would suggest taking it to a Jag dealer.
Hope this helps a bit about what it could be

Sean

Thanx for all suggestions, there all quite informative i have just looked at the ecu prices on ebay.co.uk and im looking around £60 with delivery. I think im going to go down that route as it makes sense that im being restricted to 75.

Is it a costly job to fit the ecu and do you need to have it re-programmed?

Cheers Lee

lwalters, I have replaced an ecu in a saturn before and basically you just have to get the car to re-learn the electrical system. I am not sure how to do this on the xtype, yet on the saturn it was a combination of turning the key at certain times. Use the "advanced search" above, or hopefully with more experience in this realm will chip in.
