They quote the XE as 1474 kg to 1665 kg. I'm unsure why they have the diesel as the lightest model (lighter than the gasoline). They quote the 3 series as 1385 kg. I'm going to convert all to lbs since that's how I think.

So the XE is from 3249 to 3670. The 3 series they peg at 3054. I don't know what 3 series they are using, I've never seen one tested at that weight.

The last 320 (rwd) that Car and Drive tested (6/29/13) weighed in at 3337; the 328D awd tested 10/7/13 weighed 3660; their test of he 328 rwd on 2/6/12 weighted 3485.

I think we will need to wait until production versions are tested by independent organizations to see where the weight falls, but I think it will come in very competitive with the 3 series.

I'll wait for some actual tests with weights, though I do remember reading a Jaguar boss saying that they're complying with some upcoming regulations(I forget what they pertained to) and that once the competition does the same their weights are going to increase more.

Too soon to make a judgment. 95% of the people buying it, won't be taking weight into consideration. Same goes for the BMW. It's just the very small percentage that are on the forums who are sensitive to weight etc.


The XJ is 600-700 pounds lighter than any 7 series and S class. So we will have to wait and see.

Yes, ultimately the weight is just a statistic unless you are wanting to throw it around. And that weight was one of the reasons why the XF has such a beautiful ride, and the XK too.

I wasn't aware it was launching with the EcoBoost engines. Seems strange.

Autocar magazine this week has some more details. The new 2 litre petrol engine is turbo-charged, and has two power levels, 197 and 237 bhp, but the same CO2 emissions for both engines. This is 179 gm/km, thus giving a road tax of £225 per annum. This is with an auto transmission as standard. Th diesels get a manual option. However I could easily live with that £225, as I'm already paying £285 for my 2004 XJ6.

I just hope I am still motoring when the cars have depreciated a bit to my sort of budget level !!

I will be very disappointed if an apples to apples XE weighs more than a 3-Series.

I think I read that the XE architecture is ahead of its time for safety standards and that's why it is heavy now. It is an all new frame so they are building it planning for ten years in the future. When the C-class and 3 series catch up in a couple of years they will likely be heavier than the XE. So for now the XE may be behind the Germans a little but its a good start and could possibly out shine them in the future.


Thing is, people might expect the XE to out German the Germans, but that's not why we like Jags right? I like the different ways the Jags perform to the German cars. There's a warmth to the engineering that makes them a great place to sit and drive.

Well, not exactly. The C-Class is all new for 2015.

I do agree that they appear to have done a good job with the XE in terms of making making it competitive with the formidable Germans. I think the weight issues don't have anything to do with the body and frame, but are the result of "old-school," carry-over components from the JLR parts bin.

In order to get really serious about weight reduction, a manufacturer has to make major investment in re-engineering every single component including all the "nuts and bolts." Every extra ounce makes a difference when you add it all up.

Cool who cares what it weighs

Just read the July edition of jaguar World magazine BMW and Merc cannot compete with that despite being lighter they are off the road and in the bushes

Agreed. The XF was quite a heavy thing and it drove much better than the 5 series and the E class. I read somewhere that some of the weight in the XE is in the suspension which is supposed to be awesome, anyway.

Even in the Benz Blog the review of the XE against the Benz C seemed to have the XE in front, on my reading.

You are dead right--- Jaguar put money into a far superior suspension system, thank goodness, that makes the XE win hands down. Weight in the right place produces an unbeatable ride.

Unfortunately I have a three year wait to drive one, as I rely on depreciation to make the car affordable to me on my income.

My father once said to me "the trouble with you, Fraser, is you have First Class tastes and a Second Class income" !!

It's not easy to make a comparison. Not all manufacturers give truly like for like weights. But as far as I can make out stated kerb weights for the three models are

2015 BMW 3 Series 2.0 diesel manual :- 1430 kg (or 1450, depending)
2015 Jaguar XE 2.0 diesel manual :- 1475 kg
2015 Merc C Class 2.0 diesel manual :- 1485 kg

Nothing in it really.

From what I've seen and read so far, the Jag XE is superior to the BMW 3 and personally I am not at all concerned with a few pounds of weight.

We have a F-Type R which is fabulous, and may add the XE once it becomes available in North America.

Exactly! The weight of the car or any other car for that matter will be the farthest thing from my mind when I make the purchase.
