XE 2017 steering wheel buttons and stalks not working
Morning all,
Looking for some help here, I’ve got a 2017 XE and, more increasingly, the indicator stalks and buttons on the steering wheel have been stopping. After a while, but a different length of time each occasion, or after taking the battery out and back in again, they start working again.
Curiously, the windscreen wipers still work (although on auto they just go continuously) and the sidelights come on.
My assumption was a loose wire/ connection but I’ve not seen any similar issues in my online search.
I have replaced the clock spring + stalk assembly as I’ve read this is a common fault but to no avail.
I have tried an OBD reader that I have but it doesn’t give me any codes, advice for a decent one would be great too.
This has happened a couple of times in the last 18 months but it just went away. It seems to be happening every couple of days now.

These cars are very sensitive to battery voltage, a weak battery causes all sorts of unrelated issues. Since your issues are focused on the steering column, I doubt it’s that. A few folks in the F-type forum have had bad ground studs, and I’d guess your issues are either related to the harness/connectors in the column, or whichever ground studs they use. Unfortunately, I don’t have much XE documentation for wiring.
Edit: it turns out I have a lot of info, but unfortunately, the electrical reference and schematics use an HTML hierarchy and all the links are broken. But with enough motivation, you can work through individual files or perhaps search the folder for keywords. There’s also a workshop manual in there, but I think with the same broken links.
