Default Looking to purchase XF 3.0 Diesel 275

Gentlemen I have been on this site for a while now with my X type which sadly passed away year before last in the midst of all the crap going on in the UK.

I'm now looking to purchase an XF around 2013/4 for an extortinate amount of money and wondered if there are any common faults I should be looking out for, is there any help or advise you can give on this purchase?

No doubt well be talking again when I do get one, but would be great if you can point out any regular problems that arise on this car..!

Hi Dennis thanks for your reply.
I know diesel is the fuel of Satan, but the price of gas over here is extortinate, $8 a gallon and thats come down, so I need a combination of performance and decent MPG. there doesn't seem to be many things that look like they go very bad on these but just hoping to see if there's any gremlins I should look out for from the guys on the site.

The V6 diesel has a bit of a bad reputation when installed in Land Rover vehicles, but not when in Jaguar cars. Owners putting a lot of stress into the engine off-roading or trailering have seen crankshaft breakages. This is not all that likely with a car in normal use, although maybe on a track day it could be overstressed. Main thing with diesel engines is fuel dilution from the fuel from frequent failures to clear the DPF, (this manifests itself as the oil level rising). Other thing is oil seal failure in one or both of the turbochargers. This shows itself as fairly rapid loss of engine oil with no apparent leaks; the oil is getting past the worn seal and either into the exhaust, or into the inlet side. Eventually, if not detected or dealt with, the engine can run on its own oil and you get what is called "diesel runaway", whereby the driver turns off the engine which shuts the fuel pump off, but the engine keeps on running on its own oil until that is all consumed and then the bearings fail)

Have a read

I don't think the engine will give you much trouble, to be honest, but do bear in mind diesels don't like lots of tootling around town, they need a good gallop every so often. So consider your own use pattern of a car, then see if a diesel will match to it.

Thanks guys, yes I do a fair bit of miles visiting family and traveling to work so Diesel is ideal for me. Don't think ill be using on a track, maybe the odd blast on M65 late at night when there's no body on it but that's about it. Loved my X Type diesel so Im hoping this purchase will be as pleasurable and look forward to getting her.

Looking for walnut facia kit too as this one has the black covers on.
