USB Port, playing music
Does anyone have advice on playing music files through the USB port in the consol, Cubby? I tried an Ipod shuffle, both using ITunes to load the songs and using it like a plain flash drive. The Owner's Manual says that older Ipods might not work.
I also loaded a dozen audio tracks onto a generic USB flash drive with no results. When I get to the USB port on the Media screen it says No Audio Files. The Owner's Manual says FAT format, I don't know what that means or if I have it or not.
Has anyone been able to play audio music files through their USB port and the Media screen?
I have read that there might be some way to accomplish this using Bluetooth, but I am trying to stay as low tech as possible.

No problem here. You can format your USB drive to FAT files on your computer. Install stick, 'Computer', highlight the drive you just installed, right click to bring up options and 'Format' choosing FAT. You can make folders on the drive to store/label different music.
That makes sense. I use Apple products, but I have a large folder called "Utilities" that includes a program called "Disc Utilities" that includes some functions for erasing a flash drive and setting it up with choice of formats, including FAT. Which I did, and copied a CD of tunes onto the USB flash drive.
Except that the car tells me there are no audio files on my USB drive.
The car offers a "Browse" choice for the USB port, which I took and got a decorative figure of little colored boxes changing places for several minutes but not coming up with anything.
So, no luck yet.
Any other suggestions are welcome.

I remember a few posters (forum?) had the same problem as you are. Some changed USB size or type and it worked (I'm using Samsung 32GB 3.0 USB). What format did you use? MP3 or some Apple format (I'm not familiar with Apple).
No format. Just a CD of music bought retail. I see the copyright is 1995, original MGM soundtrack, Get Shorty. It must be as generic as they come.
I just drag copies off the CD onto the FAT formatted USB stick.
I read a long string of comments on this forum 2011-2017 on the same problem with people who had much more technical issues than I ever dreamed of.
And a wide variety of luck in getting the USB port to work, in no particular pattern.

Copyright protected? Did you plug the USB into another car or PC to see if it plays?
Good question. I plugged the USB stick into the Huyndai and it didn't read there either, so it does not seem to be a Jaguar problem. I just need some special way to load song tracks onto a USB drive.
I probably will not put any more effort into this unless someone pops up with an easy answer.

No easy answer without you experimenting. Try this.....Try transferring just one song from Apple Play (?) or I Tunes or whatever and see if that works. I bet that CD was copyright protected. I save songs/music from internet radio using PDMarq recorder on my PC then add them to a play list on my USB drive. You can get around copyright protection but you have to be willing to try different things.
Sounds like... you might need to covert the audio files on the CD to a format the car will work with. And yes the USB stick needs to be formatted correctly (FAT).
Guessing you have iTunes on your Mac and the link below will walk you through the process.

Downloaded a format FAT32 on line to set my 128 GB thumb drive to FAT32, but NO JOY
Likely this is above my skill level
Maybe someone here can provide a more clear path, otherwise I'll be looking for some 8 year old to fix the problem for me...............
BEST !

I got the same error message you received, and by dumb luck I discovered that my particular 2012 XJ will not play USB music containing multiple formats.
I reformated the 8 GB stick and placed nothing but MP3 files of 128 KB bitrate. Dunno if my car (or yours) will support other formats or densities, but maybe try this.
At least in the early cars, playing USB music is a bit clunky. There's this format problem, I can only format a few subfolders, the "shuffle" feature chooses the next song irrespective of what's already played, etc.

BaltoBernie makes a good point too. If I load 15-20 CD's the system plays fine but seems to have problem playing everything in order as it's on the USB drive?
I do have some titles messed up such as when I load only a single disc of a multi-disc set. I might end up with a cd or two labeled with disc 1 or disc 2 ionstead of the artists name.
I also seem to have the music repeat before it's played all the CD's I have loaded.
I can go back to browse and select the folders that have not been played so I think it's some kind of ID3 tag issue.
So yes I also find it a bit clunky on my 2014.

Good point and I have dropped back to using 8GB thumbs drives as that holds so many CD's anyway.
I also have standardized on 320K MP3 CBR files.
The larger drives seem to cause more problems too?
