2008 jaguar xf 4.2 sv8
I agree about whether it actually is the timing chain. The 4.2 is a very, very, stout engine that was used in every Jaguar (sold in North America, at least) produced after 2003. Since the replacement of the 4.0, with the widely recognized cam tensioner problems, I have not heard of anyone having timing chain problems. I would recommend performing a more careful "listening" test on and around start-up.
If you can obtain a stethoscope use it to listen along the top of the cam cover. Also listen for fuel injector noise, they can often be very noisy making a lot of clacking sounds.
Good luck and please report back on what you learn.

You dreamed of a big star -
He played a mean guitar -
He loved to drive his Jaguar...
So welcome to the machine

Another vote to look elsewhere. It took Jaguar 3 tries to get the tensioners redesigned for the 4.2L and after 2003 it is VERY rare to see any problems.
Who told you the noise was timing chains? Someone who does not work on Jaguars?
