The radiator cooling fan in my 2009 XF 3.0L Petrol does not come on even at high operating temperature. The temperature sensor seems to be working as the OBD2 system effects the temperature rising with time. The OBD2 reflects a DTC code “P0480 Fan 1 Control Circuit”.
Visual inspection shows no obvious damage to the wiring or connections. After about 20-25 mins the engine overheating BROWN warning sign lights up when the car is not moving. While traveling the air flow from the speed keeps the warning from lighting up.
The thermostat has been replaced with a new one.
Any one can help me to diagnose what the problem with this fan can be. Any one had a problem with the the cooling fan module ?
Jaguar will not sell a loose cooling fan module but will supply the whole cooling fan assembly (fan cowling) for close to £600. I appreciate any assistance from anyone who can help. Thank you in advance.

 

Yeah, unfortunately the fan controllers do fail over time, and I haven't found a replacement yet outside of buying an entirely new assembly, which you've discovered are not cheap new, and even used seem to be quite pricey (and given these controllers do seem to fail, I'm not sure of the sense in fitting a used one).

The problem is they're not like the fan controllers of old with a "low" and a "high" speed which you could often override with a wiring hack etc - the controller takes a PWM signal from the engine management which runs the fan at (e.g.) 35% duty cycle, and increases as the need for cooling does.

The fan speed controller is removable from the fan, which implies you could replace it, but I haven't been able to source one (yet).
