Default 2009 xf shifting question

As i have reported in other threads i recently bought this car and learning it. Yesterday in stop and go so cal fwy traffic the car went into a different shift mode by itself. Gear numbers appearing on dash as if I manually shifted it. Then returned to normal shifting when traffic opened up. The owner manual has some vague language about adaptive shifting. Is this the way the car is supposed to behave?

you must have accidentally hit a paddle.

when you're in D, and you hit a paddle, it will turn into "temporary manual".....where it will let you manually change, but if you dont do anything within a certain amount of time, it will go bakc into automatic

That happens to me from time to time. If so, pull and hold the upshift paddle for 2-3 seconds and it goes back into auto
