2015 XF Portfolio Cooling System
So I posted a week ago about a XF I just bought last week that had the high temp light turn on the day after I bought it. Anyways it’s still in the shop but the dealership replaced the thermostat, auxiliary water pump and a sensor. I went to pick it up today but they informed me that they noticed some “chewed up” wires for the fan and when they test drove it the fan was only turning on up to 20%. They are replacing the fan and fan control module now. They believe this was the root cause of the whole issue. I’m happy this is all being replaced at no cost to me but my question is should I keep this car? Or try to cancel the sale and get something else? It has 59k miles on it and out of warranty. The cost of the warranty seems too much they were asking $6000. Any advice appreciated! Thanks!
Seems like they are at least trying to do right in selling you a car that works. But "chewed wiring" sounds like rodent damage and there could be more lurking. Or it could have been a careless mechanic who fixed something else once upon a time, didn't re-secure the wiring and it got into the fan blades or maybe touched something hot and melted. That happens more frequently than the industry would want to admit. Have them show you the damaged wires, where they are in the car and if it looks like a rat did it, then you might want to investigate further to see what else might have been chewed on. But if it seems like an isolated thing, ask for at least a 30 day warranty on the cooling system and drive the heck out of it for those first 30 days to test it.
Agreed. If they fix it up and it works then hopefully all solved. Then it's no different from any other used car - but you've had a few bits addressed.
I would look more at overall condition, work done over the years, how it looks in and out (has it been cared for). And less about one specific issue
All that said, as these cars age they are expensive to repair. As any euro import performance car parts are expensive and labor is too
Either you want to be good at diy and get help on the forum here. Or have a great Indy mechanic experienced with Jaguar
If you can turn a wrench, lots of great guidance and help on here - for free!
