cooling fan always on 2010 XKR

Talking cooling fan always on 2010 XKR

I just purchased lightly used 2010 XKR coupe.As soon as I unlock the car,even in the morning with a cold engine the cooling fan goes on and it stays on all the time.Is this normal operation for this model?

No! It usually means that either your thermostat or water pump is not operating properly. You need to have this checked immediately, Jaguar engines don't like overheating and can have disastrous results.

the dealer recommended to replace the whole fan which I did and it made no difference.I guess a thermostat is next

I would think the dealer would be able to see what the fault is before they would just change the fan. I would ask why change the fan if it is working. Also did you get the old fan back. Unless they need the part for warranty I always ask for my old parts back. Also I would not pay for the replacement if they didn't fix the problem. I don't know the wiring but usually the fan is triggered by either water temperature or the AC system. If the sensor is in the T stat housing then they should have started their fault finding there. Tell them to fix it on their dime.

I think it is the fan relay/switch. The dealer should have known that. If the fan is running, it doesn't need to be replaced! I had the same problem on an old Porsche I owned. The fan never shut off until the battery died. I put in a new $25 relay and the problem was solved.

I tried swaping relays from the fuse box and did not fix the promblem. As far as the dealer and I had Range Rover and my LR3 worked there before and they just criminals.IfI play stupid they will sell me an engine tomorrow.
They replace the fan and the fan still goes on assoos as I unlock the car before I start the engine.Another mechanic said it is mormal for the XK"s but I havent seen another one to compare with.

This car is nothing like an old Porsche..it is entirely computer controlled.

The dealer, unfortunately at your expense, ruled out the electronic control module for the fan, because it is actually part of the fan assembly that was replaced.

A bad thermostat will not cause this problem.

The car has two engine coolant temperature sensors. I would most suspect a problem with one of them next.

To determine this, suggest getting an inexpensive OBDII scanner for two reasons. First you can determine what the car thinks the coolant temperature is, and second you can see if the vehicle has stored any faults related to this problem.

I will look in to the coolant sensors as well.My generic scanner did not generate any erros.I bought the factory workshop manual and it doesnt specify which one is the relay.When I remove one of the three relays in the engine fuse box ,the fan stops and tried one of the other relays and still the fan stays on,so it must be a sensor

I had this issue on my 97 xk8 and it was the climate control unit. If I shut off the climate control the fans would shut off and come on when engine was at temp.

If AC was on the fans would come on as soon as started the car when cold. I know the new system are integrated into the touch display but you may want to try that as a test. Shut off the climate controls and see if the fans stay on when you start the car.

I will try to unlock the car the A/C off to see.After I start the car within a mile the cooling fan runs at full speed.I am at a traffic light and it sound like a bus.
There is no way any car should run like this with the fan at full before the engine is even hot.

If the engine is cold and not running the fan will turn on if there's no signal from ECM.
Assuming that they are working while an ignition is off (car unlocked/waked up), there's a false power on them.
Check if there's a 12V on a fuse F31 in a power distr.box after unlocking a car. If there are 12V with ignition off - check if the R7 relay is good.

Hi did you ever get to the bottom of this problem as I've the exact same with my white 2010 model XKR 5.0 supercharged!! Thanks alan

followed advice on here checked relay 7 fuse 31 and followed wiring loom after removing bumper and headlights. Checked earth's on passenger driver sides found cooling fan plug connector was a little loose
