Default Automatic transmission display

Hi you guys being a newcomer to the XF and its many gadgets and digital displays I was just wondering if anyone could answer a particular question that's been bugging me.When the car is moving and you look at the motion dispaly on the dashboard it is showing the driving functions P,R,N,D,S all of the time.I have noticed on my sons M4 Beamer that when its moving it shows the gears display 1,2,3,4,5,6 and obviously which gear is present at the time.Is there something I should be doing to allow me to see the gears function display on the screen or do I have some technical problem that I need to get fixed.
I would be pleased for any follow up regarding this.

You can select S mode to see the gears, or enable the paddles to work in D mode. I dont think you can see the gears otherwise.

Thanks but I am sure during one journey they appeared on screen and never since.
This might have been in a dream but sure I saw them.
Then again I could have been having an age thing moment LOL

If you enable the pads to work in Drive, you'll see them anytime you bump a paddle. Maybe that is what you did. They go away is you select S and then back to D until the paddles are touched again.

Thank you my friend that's a coincidence as just took car in to get a few minor problems sorted to my Jag dealer and the guy who gave me a lift back has just explained your very comments.
So with two guys saying the same thing I think we have cracked it so very much obliged.
