Default Bad Smell From AC Vent

Anybody here have a problem with bad smell coming from the Air Con vent? My XF all of a sudden had that problem. I changed the cabin filter and looked for foreign objects that may be in the system. But that did not clear it. I did remember a trick that I learned as a young mechanic fixing up barn finds. I ran the system on high heat for thirty minutes and then let it air out with the air con on. It seems to have cured it. Hopefully it does not return. I am thinking that it is just mold and mildew in the core and not anything serious. Any body have a similar experience?

You probably don't run the heater much in Guam! And all that heat and moisture doesn't help keeping the mildew away either.

Yep, not running the system regularly will net a smell..also not changing the pollen filter yearly and or if it's damp for a long time and then the system is run, carries that mildew smell into the evaporator.

When I was on Jag, this was a big thing on S Type, factory released a bulletin to help clean out the mold/mildew from the evaporator..was pretty much a Lysol formula that was sprayed on the evaporator and allowed to drain off through the hvac box drains

Hafa day My friend! when I was in Guam at Anderson AFB, condensation and mold were ALWAYS a problem with our Aircraft HVAC units, and since we couldn't just remove and clean the heat ex changers we used a product similar to this.

I got this from Grainger, but any HVAC equipment store should carry something like this. I use it on all my cars once a year, usually just after the first 80° day as the heat helps it clean and dry. I just remove the cabin filter and spray directly into the HVAC box. The dirt just runs out the HVAC drain tube.

I have many projects on AAFB. The place is so busy these days with the relocation of the Marines from Japan. Things are changing fast and we are now home to a new group of B-2 bombers and F-22 Raptors.
