Default Condensate drain

Where is it on an 09? Its hard to see back around the firewall with the car only on ramps so maybe i need to get it up on all fours but the drain is plugged and i need to get that sorted.

Talked to the dealer and was told there are two rhat run down along the transmission under the heat shielding. Going to try and find and clear them this weekend.

We have the same problem with the S Type. The condensate drain is hidden up and under the heat shielding. No one has been able to get at it without removing the shields and they are riveted on. Plus it appears the drain is located above the transmission which would require you dropping the transmission and then attacking the heat shields.

Take a picture if you can get to it which I doubt you can because the XF is just an S Type with a different body. They are identical underneath.

Have never heard of two drains and that does not make sense as every car I have ever worked on has only had one drain. But this may be a running change so report back if you can. Luckily a clogged drain is very rare on the S Type and hopefully on the XF too!

Is your carpet wet?

Yeah the carpet in the rear. It appears as though the water is getting blown through the console. The carpet gets wet from under the consol below and ajacent to the vents down into the rear footwell. If i cant access them i might have to do the xf mod and add another drain.

If the carpet is wet in the rear of the car are you sure you don't have your rear moon roof drains blocked?

Might be worth a check?

We just don't get any reports of condensate drain clogging on the S Type or XF. Now the XK guys have all kinds of condensate drain problems on the earlier models.

Can you hear any water sloshing around when you turn corners? Normally the condensate builds up and comes sloshing out when it gets high enough.

Its doubtful its the moon roof drains but worth a check. The reason its doubtful is this is phoenix and we get very little rain but when i noticed it was a couple of days after a car wash.

Just went out and checked again as i got poured on today and the carpet is soaked. Could still be condensate as the humidity is high and there is never water under the car.

If it is the moonroof woudnt there be water other than on the floor?

There was a lot of discussion of clogged moon roof drains over on the S-Type list earlier this year. You might want to surf over there and have a look.

For example:

Looked at the moonroof drains last night and of course i could not access the outlets without major surgery so i tried a test. I vacuumed up the water and left the windows down, car is in a garage, all night. This morning there was a touch of damp but thats it. No rain today but it is humid. Drove to work and there is water in the rear footwell again. The only possible place is the ac unit.

I cant believe the peltier units in the seats would cause condensation but they were off so that cant be it. The weather is supposed to stay like this for a while so im going to take it off the road until i can figure it out.

Let us know if you find it. Don't get reports of this so I am interested to see what it is.

One last thing to try is after everything is dried out run water on the roof around the moon roof. See if the carpet gets wet. Your car wash comment points back to the moon roof drains.

Ya, open the roof and put a hose, running slowly, over the well. See if the well fills indicating a blocked drain and then see if the floor gets wet.

found the smoking gun. Vacuuming up the water tonight I realized it appeared to be coming from under the seat. There are foot well vents there so I stuck my inspection camera up the duct and found standing water about 5" in.

Hopefully I'll be able to find and clear the drains this weekend.

Well I figured out the drain and it was not easy nor am I confident on the long lasting repair.

I was able to figure out it is the "assembly" that is in the picture. It is under the heat shielding but is not a tube that runs down the sides. To get at it from underneath the transmission would have to come out. To get at it from up top the climate controls system would have to come out as it is dead center under the evaporator. Neither are a good option. I cleared it by blowing air in the area around the seal as marked. It started dripping under the car after that and dripped for a fair amount creating a salad plate size puddle, so it is draining but how well is another story. If it continues to be a problem then I'll have to do a XK type mod and put my own drain in.

I have no experience with this but could you use some type of pipe cleaner or flexible brush to make sure it's clear?

When was the last time you changed the cabin Pollen filter? (it's behind the glove box)..when I do mine, I spray a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water in to the filter opening to flush out the evaporator box where the condensate water collects..thereby killing the algae and mold growth that blocks the drain...Make sure you put down some plastic sheets or a bunch of rags to catch any bleach water form hitting your carpets.

Hmmmm thats an idea. Changed it last oil change but i can certainly pull it and do that again. Do you run the ac while doing that? Seems like the mix would just sit on t he fan and evaporate if not.

My plan if this is not resolved or it clogs again is to cut open that well in the pic and try and flush through there. Maybe a small hole and inject some bleach water would just do the trick.

I wouldn't run the fan right away..let the solution seek the lowest point in the bottom of the evaporator box and it should just drain out on to the floor below if the drain is cleared.

Seems like it would all just sit in the bottom of the fan housing but worth a shot.

Thanks

After a bit..a few minutes, go ahead and drive it around and then turn the fan on full blast, that will clear out the fan housing too.

Good job on finding it. I can't tell from your picture where in the car is that? Above the transmission hump?

Do you think it's algae growing inside the tube?
