Default Coolant Expansion Tank (2009 FX SC)

I got the coolant low message, but the expansion tank is full. Researching the issue, it seems as if I need a new expansion tank as the float is sitting at the bottom of the tank, and is no longer floating, confirmed by using a flashlight and a piece of wire to move the float up and down.

I have replaced expansion tanks on both of my S-types and the XJ8 so I sort of know what to expect, can anyone confirm that this is a straightforward DIY job with no particular gothas?

Also can anyone confirm whether the expansion tank is the same on the NA and SC '09 XF's?

TIA

- Tim

I had the same problem on my SC 2008 XF. From what I understand, the coolant tanks are NOT the same between NA and SC, so be careful.

Instead of getting a new tank, why not try putting a foam ring under the float? I trimmed one of those foam rings that comes on the top of a stack of DVDs and my float has worked fine ever since.

If you do decide to change the tank, it's pretty easy. I'd recommend that you drain the coolant from the reservoir first, and before pulling the tank out too far, remember to disconnect the coolant level sensor hidden under the bottom of the tank.

They are two different tanks, I took a round piece of foam and put a hole big enough in the middle to go over the pole in the tank, hold down with a wire coat hanger, take needle nose and put dead float back on pole and then put the black cap on. Be sure to keep that foam down during the process. Did this yesterday, worked like a charm.
