Unhappy First Problem - 2nd Day of Ownership

Well, we had our first issue the 2nd day after bringing home our new '11 XF SC.

We had a warning to check the fuel filler cap or something like that. OBD2 codes P0442 and P0456. We just got a chance to take it in today and drop it off. They said that there's some kind of leak somewhere and they're having trouble finding it. (my wife talked with them)

Anyway, I sure hope this isn't the first indication that we got one of the handful of lemons out there.<sigh>

This is a very common occurrence on post 91 cars when the evap control spec got much tighter.

Most likely cause is a gas cap leaking air.

You will note the admonition on the sticker on the fuel filler door to tighten the filler cap until you hear at least three clicks. I think the filler cap itself has a note to make sure it is on tight before starting the car.

Any air leak in the fuel vapour recovery system will trigger that warning as the most common cause is the filler cap.

On my car I would ask them to replace the filler cap and see if that works.

Incidentally, the car will run fine with this fault.

Thanks for the reply, Jagular. It wondered if it might just be the cap but they found the leak and it wasn't the cap. My wife talked with them so I don't know exactly what was wrong but the fix required a part that had to be ordered in. It is supposed to be fixed by the end of day today.

She said something about it involving something near the purge valve or something like that. I'll try and talk with them about it when they call to say it's fixed.

I hope this is the only problem we have. It really sucks driving around an ugly rental car.

The most common problems with those cars are the "LEAK" detection pumps, or "Canister Close Valves"(which older cars had).
