BTW, new ones usually run for around $600-700 from a reputable dealer. Replacement takes about a half hour. It is very easy to do and I can give you directions on how to do it if you want to try it. You don't lose any fluid and only requires basic hand tools.

Thanks Ed. You are a lifesaver. With a newborn in the house and only one income, I'm going to have to do this one myself. No more $1600 bills.

I took a look at it this morning when everyone was sleeping, here is what I can see:
- It slides out of the top of the engine bay so the cowls have to be removed
- there is one clip that fastens it to the rad
- there is a hose strap clipped into it to support a cooling hose
- there are two wiring harnesses that clip into it for fan control and power

Am I missing anything?

If all is correct, can you tell me how to get that clip off that secures it to the rad? I fooled with it for 5 min and couldn't budge it.

The exchange rate is around CDN$1.35 at the moment and you'll find the customs brokerage and possible duty payable when you bring in a part from the U.S. Or anywhere for that matter will push the EBay new price above what the dealer is quoting you for new.

Ok, let's see if I remember how I did it.

The unit does slide out from the top. For that very reason, you need to remove the air duct tubes that go on the front of the engine and are in the way for you to remove the fan assembly. They are easy to get out and mine had a couple of hose clamps and the rest were just clips that pop off. You can use a flat blade screw driver to pry them off.

However, you will need to jack up the car and remove the flat plastic pan underneath the radiator so you can easily access the harness for the cooling fan assembly. Also, you will need to access the connector that goes from the main harness to the fan assembly. I had to turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and remove the inner fenderwell just in front of the tire. The connector is there and easily comes apart.

While I had the fan assembly removed, I also took a shop vacuum and removed any foreign debris stuck to the radiator.

It sounds like a lot of work, but it actually goes fast. If you have a set of ramps, you might be able to drive them up on that and still access the inner fenderwell. Some people remove the fan assembly without removing the plastic panel under neath the radiator just behind the front bumper. But I took mine off so it would be easier to get to the harness.

Well, I've got the fan off and I wrecked the fan controller trying to get it apart. It was all glued together and it's actually more complex than I thought. There is a wire tied to it that isn't related to the fan. One harness has six pin positions but only two pins, the harness on the other side of the wire looks to be capped off. This doesn't go anywhere right?

Another question, what are the black oval things resting in the belly pan. Are they sensors or antenna?

If I new how to post a picture I would show you the wire I'm describing

I told you that you have to replace the fan and the controller as an assembly. It was not designed to come apart. But anything is possible. I don't remember anything being in the belly pan. I will have to go out and look at my car. There is only one connector that goes to the fan controller if I remember correctly. Inside the fenderwells on each side are your TPMS(tire pressure) sensor receivers. Maybe that is what you are talking about.

I remember you saying that. I wanted to see if I could get it apart just for my own curiosity. No harm done, I needed a new one anyway which is why I tried that.

No need to check on that harness. I'll figure it out.

If I had a new fan assembly I'd be done already. Time to order one!

Thanks for the help.

Ryan,
Curiosity is good. I kinda wanted to do the same thing myself. If I had been desperate, I would have done the same and if I had to, I would have wired the fan where it ran all the time which actually would have gotten me by. Our weather here is in the high 80 degree f every day. So constant running would have been fine. One of my Corvettes has that and stays at about 160 degrees water temp all day long no matter how the traffic is. Hope that your new fan assembly comes in soon so that you can get back to enjoying your car. After you get her fixed, you should take the car back to your previous mechanic and show them how stupid their diagnosis was. I am so glad that you decided to fix it before you ruin the head gasket. And then, that would have been a major repair.

More refinement to come once I get home. Should be able to list the Torx and sockets as well as put some arrows on the pictures.

By the way, see the picture for the wire I was talking about, I haven't had a chance to see where it goes. The source is a six pin harness right beside the fan harness.

It's clipped to the fan shroud but doesn't seem to have anything to do with the fan.

I don't remember that wire. But when I went back and looked at my fan assembly, I could see a wire which did not look like it was attached to anything. I would have to look at a wiring diagram to confirm this though.

I don't think that I told you....Congratulations on the new addition to the family! We had two new grandkids last year and I have been really busy with the little girls.

I've attached the updated instructable and native file.

My new fan finally came in. I was able to install it and successfully test it. Looks like the problem is solved so far. More driving while watching the temperature of the car is in order to make sure the problem is gone.

Hopefully someone can post the instructable in an area where others are located.

I don't believe that wire is attached to anything

Thanks for all the help and congrats to you as well.

I am curious to see where you got your fan assembly and how much it cost you for the part plus shipping. This is testament that you can do some repairs yourself and save a ton of money.

Great job! I am sure that you saved lots of time and possibly a more serious head gasket repair. You are pretty awesome!

Thanks! It was $1100 from the dealership and took 4 days to arrive. Everything else would have taken quite a bit more time and the exchange rate and brokerage would have made it just as expensive.

I saved roughly 700 in labour.

Default Cooling fan assembly replacement

Hello my name is Garry. I'm new to the forum and I have the same issue. I follow a really good thread by Ryan Oldie on how to remove the coolant fan assembly. But I got stuck when I got to the removal of the cooling fan assembly. The assembly didn't want to come out after removing the cooling fan bolt and clip.

Can anyone give me advise to see if I missed removing any other bolt.
