Hi everyone.
Totally new here, fresh account, fresh Jag owner
Just got this 2009 beauty for killer price in Germany. Little hailstone damage, but 130 000km on the clock and basically like new.
I am an IT expert, a hacker and a tech enthusiast.
Have a few questions for you seasoned pro's here:
Planning to install a 10" touchscreen, completely replacing the oldschool console. They come pre-configured based on your VIN so everything work in them. I've seen a lot of praise on them even in western audience, so I assume they are pretty good quality for obviously being a chinese aftermarket parts. However, I really like the wood trim I have in this car and the long thin one needs to be removed in order for the screen to fit. They supply a replacement one that comes in two pieces, but it's a silver one. That won't do for me. Can you help me identify the specific color of my wood trim so I can buy a replacement junkyard part, cut it in the correct spots and use it like that?
In my country, we are required to have low-beam permanently enabled on cars (unless they have daylight lights, which my Jag doesn't). So obviously I turn my lights on manually. But in that case, the dashboard dims to the point that it is hardly readable on a sunny day. Is there a way to have the lights on AND have the full brightness of the dashboard?
I'm guessing the #2 can be sorted out in SDD so I am planning to buy a Mongoose (probably a clone considering the price) from a local seller including pre-installed SDD in a Virtual Machine. I am very comfortable with using this setup as I have deep virtualization knowledge. My question here is are there any things to be careful about? My goal is to understand the underlying tech as well as possible.
The climate control is a little janky. Sometimes it feels like legroom air is always hot regardless of my settings. Also, when I turn off the A/C, the air is always waaaaay hot, even on a 15°C day. What's up with that, some bad valves? I assume these are difficult to swap - I'm guessing the dashboard has to be disassembled so ideally I would do that on the same session as swapping the infotainment
The front passanger window sometimes doesn't want to roll up - it goes halfway up, then reverses down again. Looks as if it seems something is blocking it. This is solvable by closing it with more shorter taps on the button until it passes the half, then I can have it go the rest of the way up by itself. This happens regardless of which (driver or passanger) button is used, so not a specific button issue. What to look for?
The leather on the top of the dashboard is wrinkled from the sun. I can push on the wrinkles to flatten it, suggesting it just got unsticked from the dashboard itself. It is weaved on the front so I assume I should start from the windscreen, and glue it back to the dashboard. Any specific suggestions? What kind of glue or how to do this?
I plan for this to be my last petrol car, having swapped my Mondeo ST220 for it last week after 8 years of abuse usage. So I want to make it count and take a good care of it.
Thanks for your answers
A happy face of the highest degree that is impossible to fake Oldschool but classy
You need to have good power source to battery something 30 to 40 amps to use sdd safely, especially when dealing with module configs. You can search for the recommended types and model, I purchased psv 300 and have not had any issues... Used it to program 2 new keys...

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily I also sell electric bikes so I have a variable power supply capable of doing like 50A
You will be the beta tester for any Hi-Fi replacement, and with the big screen it will never look right. I would go with the smaller version that fits the original screen. The trim is called Rich Oak veneer if you insist.
Multiple places in CCF mentioning Daytime Running Lights once you get SDD set up.
On the pre-facelift the clone cable is fine, just get the green battery icon in the UI with the power supply before making changes.
The leg portion of climate is weak overall, but in Auto it may not blow anything there at all. Try hitting the stick figure in the climate menu to switch air directions to manual. It still takes forever to feel anything down there. The blend door actuator has not been a common failure so changing it out may not improve anything, it will be more obvious if it actually broken.
Need a new window regulator if it is also making groaning noises. Using the click to auto-up the resistance is triggering the safety return mechanism. Hold the switch not going past the click and it can go all the way up. You might be able to lubricate the mechanism but by the time the door is getting ripped apart you might as well replace it because it will fail anyway at the worst time. All this behavior changes depending on temperature also, cold usually killing the window.
Just adding glue can make it look even worse. Need to find a upholstery shop that is familiar with the job of separating the leather completely and regluing with adhesive appropriate for the application including stapling at the front near glass with guarantee that the result will look OEM. Ask if they work on Ferraris, lots of italian cars with this problem. If you don't find a shop that you can trust, just live with it. You will lose your mind if you try chasing perfection with this car, something will always be broken.
I never run the climate on auto, but still the legroom air feels like it doesn't fully follow the instructions I give to the system.
As for pioneering the HiFi, I'm OK with that, I did a similar thing on my previous Mondeo and it turned out great, a real help with the navigation and entertainment.
Thanks for pointing me to the right direction with the Window and the trim color.
Finally, the dashboard leather, for sure I won't just DIY in with a regular glue, but I also don't seek perfection. But just pressing on the leather it is clear that it is free in most of its area.
I will keep you updated on my progress.
