Can you give us the last six digits of your VIN? It's a letter R or S and 5 numbers.

OK so looking through your previous posts, I see now why you are asking about a replacement diff...

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...e-help-142146/

R32689 means your car came from the factory with the Ford / Visteon 8" diff.

You can buy replacement seals, and bearings for this unit. It can be re-built.

Same diff as the 2003-2007 S-Type, X350 XJ, the 2006/2007 X150 XK

Lots of info on seals, bearings, and other items needed in this thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...arings-102296/

Seals can be purchased from Jaguar as spare parts, no need to buy a complete diff.

Well thats great news! I was starting to feel like maybe this service manager was taking me for a ride the more i dug for info from him.

What is the typical failure on these diffs that are leaking usually just bearings and seals?

When I took the car in to this dealer he told me the axle was worn hmmmm

Do you only have a leak? Or is it clunking, making noises?

It's just leaking out of the driver side axle seal.

Check with a Ford dealer as they have access to those parts and know how to fit them. My 09 just had this repair done and for a lot less by a local friendly Ford dealer.

However, if your diff is howling or whining then you are put of luck as replacement gear sets for Jaguar diffs are apparently nla.

I know my way around ford vehicles pretty well had many mustangs and have built rear ends for them more then once.

Im more worried about pulling this thing out to find out i cant get parts for it then im really stuck. I dont have any whinning or grinding ive been keeping it toped up and its not to bad of a leak.

Seems like a hell of a job to drop this rear end out to open it up im going to crawl under her and have a look for some ID tags on the diff tonight and take a better look at how i may pull this thing out......Im sure being a Jaguar they have more then one "special" tool needed

Yes a Ford dealer can probably help, the diff is the same as the last of the Lincoln LS...

If it's only the axle seal leaking then you wouldn't have to drop the whole diff out of the car, just remove that driveshaft and replace the seal.

Special tools? Yes there are a couple listed;

Halfshaft splitter 307-443 + 307-442 (prize the driveshaft out of the diff, because it's held in with a circlip)
Seal installation tool 205-532 (properly locate the new seal in place, as you hammer it in)
Seal protection tool 205-461 (protects the seal as you push the driveshaft back in)

Ford dealer should have these tools.

In saying that, the guy who rebuilt my diff did not, and it wasn't a problem for him.

If you download the JTIS here on the forum, the diff sections from the 2004 S-Type would apply to your XF as well (same diff).

That's the good news. No noises means it's probably just the seal which is still an off the shelf part fitting many Dana Diffs I should think. You need only to drop the axle shaft on the affected side is my understanding. It's crowded up there but should be doable.

The axle seal is Jag p/n XR821244, Ford p/n 2R8Z-4B416-AA, should be about $14 US at the most...

Do I have to disconnect the axle from the wheel side as well of is there enough play in it to just pull out of the diff and let it hang while i change the seal? It was pulled out by the Jag dealer as i said and they told me the axle was worn and the whole diff needed to be replaced……..

The driveshaft has to come out completely, from the wheel hub as well.

Download the JTIS the full procedure is there for the S-Type.

If you don't hear any noise or feel any play in the diff then how exactly is it worn?

Pretty similar to a fwd cv boot service. Basically you swivel the hub far enough to allow removal of the driveshaft, pull and replace the seal and reconnect everything. I wonder why the mechanic suggested the diff was worn?

The instructions are interesting. I have never seen the addition of locktite to the end of the axle shaft prior to installation? On any FWD or RWD with IRS.

Is this to lock the splines into the rear diff?
