Mileages Improvement?
Hi guys,
I have a 2010 FX 5.0 with 20" new all season tires.
When I'm driving I do not have a heavy foot on gas at all, but my gas millage is pretty high. It is 24 L per 100 km or 11-12 gallons per 100 Km (city driving).
Based on what I've read on line, I guess that this is pretty high.
There is anything I can do to reduce the gas consumption? Anything to check that may not work properly?
I wish to get what Jag is advertising 17-18 L per 100 Km or 16-17 gallons to 100 Km.
Thank you in advance for your advise.
Help me to fight the gas.
M

Listen, I'm not bashing you (much) but I don't understand threads like this. You buy an expensive, relatively large, 5 liter (litre) V8 with wide draggy tires and well documented propensity for dino juice and then ask how to reduce the consumption! WTH? If fuel economy was an issue, well, you should have considered a Camry.
Sorry, it's just the way I see it.

lol, I kinda agree. I expected it with this car. I average 11 mpg. I drive the car the way I want to drive the car. But I don't know anything other than taking it more easy on the pedal that would help with gas consumption.
With a light right foot I reckon you should be getting closer to 16 litres per 100 km (about 17.65 mpg), so maybe there is a problem. First thing I would look at are the oxygen sensors, when they fail or start to malfunction fuel economy suffers but there are few other detectable symptoms. Next I would check for a blocked fuel filter, and then the condition of your spark plugs.
I just sold my XFS and bought an XFR, and in the 17 months I ran the XFS I averaged 6.9 litres per 100 km, and that's without ever trying to maximise fuel economy. I'm hoping / expecting to get no worse than double that with the XFR, but as others have said if I end up getting closer to 25 litres per 100 km (approx 12 mpg) then that's just something I will have to accept as the price of driving an XFR.

Hello OzXFS,
Thank you for your advise. I will look into these with my Jaguar dealership. As I just bought the car, I'm curious to know it better and to see based on what Jaguar advertise certain numbers. I know very well that I will not get rich or poor with + - $5-$10 (coffee money) after each fill up, but knowing the car better I believe is a bonus.
Have a great day and enjoy your new car,

Comparing your numbers to the EPA advertised stuff is guaranteed to upset and confuse. Their numbers are not representative of real life and are meant for comparison purposes only so you can see how one car stacks up against similar vehicles in the same category.
it could be your high consumption is simply from a series of short drives in extreme cold weather (like now).
My winter beater (AWD SUV) is presently indicating consumption of 30L/100KM as I'm just running back and forth to the village just 5KM away, and not much more. On the highway in the summer, I get around 11L/100KM.
My S-type will do far better on the highway than the EPA estimates, so again the their numbers don't mean much.

I'm getting about 18-20 l/100 in the city in the winter. (Car trip computers)
City during the summer is more like 14-16 for me.
With highway driving being very reasonable.
I think your consumption is a bit high.
I have a my12 5.0 na.
Have you checked the tire pressure? A bit of over inflation does help economy, at the cost of ride comfort usually.

Hi Holeecow,
It looks like "you are right on the money" with your car. My tires are good. Ive been yesterday with my jag to the dealership to check on the transmission and they took a look at the tires as well (one of the antenna was little bit off). All looks good.
Based on yesterday car inspection it looks like my transmission is having issues. It being rough when the gears are changed, having transmission jerks, couple times I had to put it on N, then go back on D and speed up. The tech got 10 errors during the test.
I think by not changing the gears properly it may influence the mileages. I'm not pro when it comes to cars.
Cheers,
M
