Default Oil pan replacement procedure for a 2013 XF 2.0 liter

I am currently having to replace a piston within the motor for my Turbo 2.0 four cylinder motor. I was hoping to be able to leave the motor in place and simply remove the head and the oil pan to accommodate the replacement. Having sourced a scrap motor to pull the needed piston out I noticed that the oil pan has three bolts attaching it to the block that are only accessible from inside the transmission bell housing. There is a 1.5" diameter access hole in the trans housing but I do not believe it to be possible to R and R those three bolts through that hole. so my question to anyone experienced with that motor is, in order to remove and replace the oil pan is it necessary to remove the transmission? Seems like a ridiculous way to have to go about things if it is so.
