Default Paddle shifters on '12 NA V8

I know that the paddle shifters have been set to operate only while in Sport mode, but I read somewhere (can't find it again, though) that they can be made to operate when in "D". I would certainly like to have that ability as I feel the need to move the Drive Selector to "S", and then using the paddles, takes WAAY too LOOONG.

Nothing in the manual about it, but is it something the dealer can do for us easily (ie, without it costing an arm and leg)?

Thanks

I don't think it's possible..I checked also and was told it can't be done...I think only the XFR can though...

It's in vehicle settings. Just go looking and you'll find it. On my 2013 anyway.

I've left mine on Sport mode only for now. I don't miss it.

The '12 model year has paddles enabled only in Sport mode on the NA V8, the SC and XF-R were enabled in both Sport and Drive. This is all clearly stated in the manual. The 13 model year went back to enabling it across the board from 4cyl to XFR in all modes. The article, which I'll have to look for again, states the dealer could enable it for you on the NA V8. I'm just wondering if anyone's had it done.

The dealer should be able to enable it through a software update.

Can't remember anyone making the change on here, but i do remember members having it disabled in D on previous generation XFs as many would accidentally activate the manual shifting without any intent.

I'll check with the dealer in a few weeks when our XF will be due for its first service. I also miss having that feature available in D, as it was in my '08XK.

I'll actually check when my XJL goes to service in less than two weeks. Just added a note to that effect to my list of things I want addressed by the dealer.

Albert, that sounds good.

Your XJL is 2011 MY correct? I believe all the 2013s with the updated software give the option.

And, pleasue, make sure they take care of the vibration in the steering so you can start enjoying the car. Hopefully you will update us with " i have thrown out the foam and the steering cover"

What model XF do you have? Paddles were disabled in D only on the NA V8, not the supercharged models.

My XJL is an early 2012 model. Around 23K win number. Not sure what the "MY" stands for?

Yes, believe me, I would be super happy to report the ride issues fixed. I can not think what other car/model I could or would want to replace the XJL with.

Oh, it's just a designation for Model Year.

Mine does also
2012 NA 5.0.
I read in the manual that it doesn't allow you to do this and was quite surprised that I could do that, contrary to the manual? I am from Canada (don't know if that matters?)

I have a base XF. It was an early 2012 model.

Well I'll be darn....Mine doesn't do it and I'm glad it's only active in Sport Mode..

But a quick question..If you tap the paddles while in Drive Mode and then shift up and down via the paddles, how do you get the transmission back into standard Drive mode again..?

You just hold the +paddle for a couple seconds and it goes back to automatic mode. Apparently it was only in MY2012 that it was disabled (and based in jjaustin, they didn't catch all of them, unless his was altered before receiving it). The explanation I read was that people were complaining because they were accidentally hitting the paddles when trying to use the directionals or wiper stalk. I'm going to ask a dealer to get mine activated in D.

That was the reason. Even after five years of experience with the system I found myself in first gear occasionally after unparking.

I'm still undecided about whether to have the paddles active in D.

I found over the years that I hardly ever paddle shifted the 6 spd. I am even less inclined to do so with the 8 spd.

The only time I can really see myself doing any manual shifting is on a weekend run on a bendy road. Then I'll have the transmission in S and the car in dynamic mode anyway.

I like having the paddles working in both D and S. I live in a hilly area, so when an incline comes i just pull a quick downshift rather than wait for a downshift. It is second nature for me as my other car I drive full time in paddle mode.

My car was the first 2012 the dealer received and I'm not sure when they switched the paddle shift operation at the factory. I am always concerned that I take my car into the dealer and they automatically update the software causing the paddles not work in D. Then I have to explain that is used to shift in D as they listen in disbelief.

The disbelief arises because you are just wasting gas for no reason.

The transmission will shift correctly if you just leave it alone.

Paddle shifting is basically unnecessary, even in S.

Well I enjoy driving my car. I never said paddle shifting was necessary, but it makes it enjoyable. I think that is why the paddles are there in the first place.

Also, I don't think I said I was concerned about gas mileage. However it does get better mileage than my other cars. If you are concerned about mileage, I suggest you get a Prius.
