Default Parking Aid - bloody unbelievable

Backup camera has been acting up for over a year. Wouldn't work in the cold rain, then the cold, then the rain, then at all. Had a repair shop read the codes - $120. B4696: according to the workshop manual, rear, right, inner sensor or ground line. Bought a new sensor - $50. found a shop to paint and put it in - $150. Didn't fix it. Out with the wife fishing around inside the bumper cover to look for a bad wire with an ohmmeter. Wire color codes don't match the workbook. Wait, the grey on yellow in on the left inner sensor, not the right??? Could it possibly be...? Put the new sensor in the left - Voila!! Camera works!! Apparently left and right have different meanings on the other side of the Atlantic.

There must be a troubleshooting routine known to the dealers but not to us DIY'ers. The recommended "public" tricks are to listen to the sensors for ticking or touch them to feel the buzzing. Neither works with my 2014 because the system shuts down in a few seconds after choosing reverse. BTW, with the bad sensor in, shift to reverse and the camera comes on for about 3 seconds then says Parking Aid unavailable, see dealer. With the sensor unplugged the camera doesn't come on at all and the message is displayed at start up before shifting to reverse. And that's the sum total of what I can contribute to your debugging efforts. Good luck.

Love this car. Best driving car I've ever owned. But its a bit short of perfect.

Default Retraction

Late last night I remembered I had been rear ended at a stop light shortly after buying the car. The repair shop either replaced or repainted the bumper cover, and that's where the connectors were most likely reversed. My disparagement of the Jaguar production and documentation systems was premature. As my Dad always told me, "Never mail that nasty letter until tomorrow morning". But you have to cut me some slack here. I'm only 80 and still learning. And as my wife will attest, I have plenty of room to grow, starting with patience.

Hi TerryinNC , so was it determined that it was a crossed or reversed connection?

I had similar issues with mine but found it to be the wire harness loom that flexed under the trunk lid. At first my parkaid sensors were erroring and then I started having issues with the camera, going dark and then off. Replaced sensors and ran diagnostics and couldn't find the actual issue but once I looked at the wire loom and seen some pinched wires, I knew. After replacing, all was good again.

Hope this helps

Kevin
