My garage door opener is old...like really really old. I was unable to program the buttons on my 2015 XF until after reading this post, I did it with the engine running, contrary to the instruction book. That worked on the first time.

Rome191, your detailed description is the best so far. UNFORTUNATELY for me, still not working....I am having issues in step #3:
"3. Press and hold the button you want to program and the button on your existing garage door opener's remote until the light starts flashing rapidly. Then release both buttons.

I AM NOT GETTING THE RAPID FLASH....AFTER SLOW FLASHING FOR ABOUT 40-50 SECONDS, THE LIGHT JUST TURNS OFF. AND WHEN I PUSH THE BUTTON TO SEE IF IT WAS PROGRAMMED, I JUST GET A SLOW FLASHING, SO CLEARLY NOT PROGRAMMED. ANY HELP?!?!?!

Are you using the repeater kit? If it doesn't work with the garage opener then it's prob not compatible and you need the repeater kit. You pair it with the remote for the repeater (not the garage door) and it should work perfectly. That's what I had to do for mine

If you are using a modern garage door opener, the built in controls in the car may not be compatible. To get around this home link make a small device (about $30) which (roughly speaking) will receive the signal from your car and retransmit it as the newer type of signal. It is a small plug in box and a old style opener button. You program the car to match the old style programmer button and you get the box to pair to your device. See here for instructions

https://www.liftmaster.com/catalogre...structions.pdf

There is a website where you can put in details of your door opener and your car and it will you if they are compatible

Good luck. Worked like a charm with mine

I cant' get the homelink in the car to blink rapidly. I was able to puck both buttons and the light started to blink slowly, when using the remote to try to program in teh car, the light on the homelink stayed the same slow blink

Both buttons pushed did successfully clear any previous codes which was indicated by a rapidly flashing light when pushed for nearly 20 seconds.
The mistake I was making was not pushing the "Program" button on the actual door opener itself after I had sync'd the remote to the rear view mirror receiver. I had to also do step 4&5 in the posted video.
