It's the familiiar issue of some idiot at a garage overtightening so it's lead to a stud coming clean off when trying to remove wheel to refurb. I'm getting conflicting advice on whether I can drive safely on 4 out of 5 nuts on one of the rears. Obviously I'll try to fix ASAP but I can't seem to find a new hub or anyone to help me fit a new stud.
I'm inclined to just replace the hub fully because I'm uncertain about the factory studs in a car of this age... How do you tell whether studs are near failure or is that not a thing if they're never overtightened? How can garages get away with overtightening when it can lead to quite dangerous issues? I'd have thought they're professionals so should know very well about using the correct torque. But now I'm paranoid that any of them could have been overtightened. I don't have special tools to measure how tight....
Anyway, anyone know where I can get a rear passenger side hub (nearside)? Are the 2010 XFR ones the same as the standard XF? Thread part left inside nut. looks like only the clean silver bit was holding it on. Note the missing nut. Fairly safe or not?
Feel free to share if you think it's very unsafe to gently drive on 4 out of 5. My plan is drive for a bit then recheck tightness and if unchanged then assume it's OK till I get it fixed. It's city driving so nothing spirited or even above 40mph.
I think you're confusing your definition of 'professional'. There's a difference between the levels of training required for a doctor and a lawyer, vs a job someone does between prison terms.
You'll be perfectly fine to limp around gently with 4 studs whilst you get a replacement. Personally I'd be replacing the broken stud and resuming life.
