XF is a great car, it might be a step down from the XJ, but I do not think so. I have had few mechanical issues. The issues I have had were with the 19 inch wheels that have a tendancy to be very soft (they do not like road "irregularties"). Apparently the rear brakes have a very short life span, the pads need replacing between 15 and 20,000 miles, which apparently is "normal".
The car is a blast to drive, holds the road well in dynamic mode, and causes stares whereever you go. Drive it and you'll see what I mean. My only regret was not getting the supercharged model, next time....

I only have several hundred miles on my XFR, but love it. If you are considering an XJ, note that the new, updated XJ model is very much like the XF, only bigger and more expensive (sort of like the 7 series BMW is to their 5 series).

We purchashed my wife's XF Premium in December, 2010. She was going from an XJ8 to the XF. She absolutely loves the XF. If possible it even has a better ride. The only issue we have had is a rattle in the moonroof or headliner. We took it to the delaer and they replaced the clips and it has been flawless ever since. It is great car.

"If you don't stick to 155, we shall jolly well wright to Daily Telegraph about it!"

Also, it doesn't hurt that the XFR they tested is the same color combo as your car
