Default Smartkey Programming with SDD

Hello,

Do any of you have experience adding smart keys using SDD?
I have a 2009 XF (250) and want to add two more smart keys.
I have the latest version of SDD, I need some help with the procedure.

Thank you.

A warning before you start, this isn’t for the faint hearted. You may lock your car completely, so it is a good idea to park it in an area where it is not in your way and still easy to access in case you need to tow it.

You may need to update modules throughout the procedures, so make sure that SDD is able to download. Also, make sure your laptop is on mains and the car connected to a noise free power supply able to deliver at least 40A@14VDC. You don’t want to see your laptop shut down in the middle of the procedure, or SDD complaining about insufficient power.

Also, you don’t want any module VIN mismatches or key antenna related issues in the DTC list. Those will need to be sorted first, failing to do so is a sure way to disaster. Guess why I know this 😊

Make sure to read the explanations and instructions before you proceed. Sometimes instructions look similar, but asking the exact opposite of the previous step, and if you fail to follow the instructions, the procedure will abort and fail. Not a big deal because you can just repeat, but its time consuming.

It’s been a while, sorry in case my memory fails on some of the procedure names. Maybe someone who did it recently can shine additional light onto this.
To get started, select any symptom related to locking the car and then proceed to the next step. Now you should be able to select ‘Service Options’ from the top menu bar.
There you’ll find several options regarding keys, one of then is adding new keys. Sorry, I don’t remember the exact naming.
You will need both keys in the car, ideally with new batteries. Sensing the keys can be disturbed by other smart keys or mobile phones / smart watches, so get those out of the car.
The procedure will erase all keys and then learn the keys one by one. While doing that, get one key in the car and place the other outside on the roof to avoid confusion. It might be a good idea to label the keys so you don’t get confused.

The problem with the procedure is that the original key is deleted in the first step – if the learning of both keys fails you’ll sit there with the ‘no smart key found’ message and unable to turn on Ignition – which is part of the key learning procedure.

The good news is, you can repeat that procedure as many times as you want, and you can sort of work around the ignition issue by pressing the start button and then open the drivers door and / or hit the warning lights button. I’m not 100% sure if the latter is really needed or if it is enough to just press the start button and ignore the ‘no smart key found’ message.

During the learning process you will be asked to press buttons on each key until the car picks it up. There are two methods that worked for me, you might try any of them: Press the button for a couple seconds, release, wait a second, then press again and repeat. The other method is to just keep the button depressed until the car picks it up. It might help to move the key around in the car whilst pressing the button. A good sign is if the car is locking when pressing the button.

In case only one or no key is detected, you can repeat that procedure as many times as you want.
Once both keys are detected, you might need to run the immobilizer procedure to learn the keys to all modules.
If after that you still get ‘no smart key detected’, or if the engine starts but you are unable to lock the car, run the instrument cluster procedure. I found this the most powerful procedure since it includes not only learning VIN across all modules but also key verification.

Finally, if all goes north, there are a few fellows here that will help you over remote connections. Costs money, but still better than towing.

Good luck

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the detailed response. I was able to find it in v167 that I am running on Win10. It does revert to legacy mode because I have a 2009my XF.

The programming function it has isn't as scary as what you went through - it doesn't erase the original key. It stores it after the open door key is pressed, and then asks for the new smart keys so it can program them. For some reason though, programming did fail, and there seem to be some communication errors that I have to look into. There is an "erase all keys" function, but I don't think I want to go there.

How can I find these guys that you mentioned that will do remote access?
