Decided to tint my windshield a few weeks ago. In Ohio you are allowed to do 80%, but the shopped talked me into 50% and i'm glad they did. It's been a HUGE help on the summer heat, since it's coated with a special layer to reflect heat. It also helps the glare from the center console and will hopefully help protect the dash. I was concerned about nighttime visibility, but no issues there either. It's really one of the better investments I've made in the Jag.
It looks darker in this pic than in real life. Front sides are 20%, rears are 5%.

When I had my Civic Si, I had tinted the windshield with 85%. I loved it because it blocked the heat, and you couldn't tell it was tinted unless I told you, and you did a side by side comparison with any other car. I was planning on tinting my whole car at tax time so I can do it all in one shot. I'm not sure what you went with 50%, I'm not sure how aggressive OH is about tint, but when I was in NC, they did a tint check when you got your inspection done, and if it was too dark they failed you, and you couldn't register your car. Here in San Antonio, they went to the same process where your inspection status automatically goes on the computer at the tax office, so failing here will keep you from registering your car too. A lot of people are going to be pissed off when they find that out.
Back on the subject, if you get good ceramic tint, how dark it is really doesn't matter, and for insurance purposes, I would feel safer with a tint that is not noticeable on the windshield, because if you hit someone at night, that will be a factor when they sue you.
Ohio, well at least my county, doesn't do inspections, so i lucked out there. I'm told the tool they use to measure tint has to fit around both sides of the glass, which can't be done on a windshield, but technically my front sides at 20% are already illegal (ohio fronts are 50%) so I'm playing with fire anyways. I'm surprised at how well i can see out of it though, i was really concerned about visibility and was ready to pull it off if i sensed any issue. Even the...older...people who have sat in my car can't tell, so it's not like its just my young eyes lol. I know a couple people who did 20% on their windshields, but that's WAY too dark for my tastes, I'm not too dumb to not consider safety first.
