Default Transmission issue

Hi guys, yesterday I experienced weird issue on my XF 3.0 V6. I started engine, put R and shifter was flashing on R but did not drive, put P and R again, I drove 20 metres on D and shifter started flashing on D but I could not accelerate, I stoped put P and D, drove 100 metres and same again, after that it was OK, has anyone ever had this problem?

Haven't checked, bought it 5 days ago, need to book a visit in the garage for a 'general health check', it has 87000 miles but I doubt that oil in transmission was changed. Also battery is weak, it sat for a 3 months in car sale dealer, checked voltage - 12.31 V, could the car battery be a reason?

Battery can be and has been proven to be a culprit of a lot phantom problems..more of in the dash board in nature though...I will be amazed if the battery is the issue with your intermittent transmission engagement...I say this because, if the fluid level is low and it may not be either, but if it is, as the transmission warms up the fluid level rises as it expands and perhaps allowing the pump to pick it up and flow through it....Based on your original post.

Let us know what you find out..

Spoke to Jag indy in my area, guy said there is a big possibility that oil is low and he will need to check the software but now he recommended to drive and give him a ring if it happens again. To change oil and software he quoted me 350 pounds + VAT, it ain't gonna be cheap but I will do it soon anyway for a peace of mind. I will let you know

In California the Jagur dealers charge over $1000.00 US! That includes a new pan (the filter is part of the plastic pan). The ZF lifeguard fluid is expensive!!!

Yeah, I heard dealers in the UK charge over 600 pounds which is close to 1000 $. You have to pay around 200 pounds for a service kit on ebay, so 400 pounds for a service is still fair price

Yes, the "factory" fluid is stupid pricey. There is an alternative fluid for 10% of that that my dealer quoted me on my 2010 XF. The whole service was to cost around $325. But I traded it in on my 13 before I had it done.

Sorry, I did not ask what the aftermarket fluid brand/spec was.

Its really not hard to check or change the fluid yourself, I did mine for about $200. I did use not ZF fluid but have had NO issues with the RedLine D6 fluid I used, wouldn't mix the ZF an RedLine though . The write up is here

The service is only a little more involved than the check. I don't know what software your tech speaks of for a trans service as I needed none.
Good luck!

The thing is: the dealers don't really know much about auto transmissions or want to deal with them. They sell cars, mainly, and do ordinary servicing like oil & filter changes at hefty prices.

Just DIY or go to a trans specialist. Even a jag indy.

Any decent indy can do it for a fraction of the cost. Many people also DIY.

This. It's not a big job even if you did need to change the fluid. But there are many on record who have done this at over 100,000K and have found the quality of the fluid is fine and the filter clean.

If the fluid is low, just top it up. There are plenty of how to's for this. It's not a hard job.

Rule one is don't panic and rush off to a dealer.
Not everyone has thousands of dollars to throw at maintenance, especially unnecessary maintenance at outragious prices.

You can do simple checks yourself with basic tools, a little research, time and organisation.
And you'll have the satisfaction of the knowing the job is done properly, which unfortunately often isn't at the dealers.

It is getting worse, started to slip on the gears when I floor it, when drops from 4 to 3 it rpm going up but do not accelerate for about 2-3 seconds and jerks, not everytime. Spoke to jag indy and going to him this Wednesday to top up oil in his garage. On Saturday I took the bottom cover off in the cheaper garage looking for a leak and transmission leaking from the sump. If top up helps I will be happy, will have to change sump + oil. If not, it means something else is broken, I found transmission reconditionned + fit 1300 pounds. fingers crossed
