Hi there, this is for a 2011 5.0 with premium audio system.
I’ve been listening to music from a USB memory stick for the short while I’ve had this car. The music has continued playing from where it was stopped by either turning audio or car off, or changing the input. What it didn’t do after a shutdown then restart was to go to the file being played on the touchscreen. The music played from where it left off, but the touchscreen would always go back to the root level. I’m not sure if that is normal behaviour or not.
Anyway, I just installed a Bovee 1000 unit onto the iPod connection and that seems to be working happily. However, now the USB memory is not recognised as being docked. I have to remove and replace the USB each time I want to listen to music from it. Quite annoying.
Is there any experience here with this problem? I wonder if the format and file structure of the USB needs changing. I thought I’d ask before I start playing with different USBs to try to save too much mucking around.
The owner's manual (Pg 279 for XK, similar) states that the device first docked will remain active until you choose to change.
Did you have a problem with the audio touch screen making the change?

I have a 2008 XKR too. The thing you need installed is called an audio connectivity module. I believe the part number is C2P16491.
It requires a dealer to fit, as it includes reprogramming the head unit to add an aux input option.
Once installed, you have a small box in your glovebox that has 2 RCA inputs, a usb, and a cord in the center cubby with an old-style ipod connector on the end.
The USB is intended for a thumb drive with MP3s on, except it's effectively useless (at least on the 2008 XKR) as you can't browse or even see a track list, the only thing you can do is repeatedly skip forward/backward 1 track with the steering wheel control.
Once you have the ACM fitted, the best solution is to also get a tune2air bluetooth adaptor and connect it to the apple connector. Its the best solution both for audio sound quality (those FM senders that others here have suggested especially suck) and because its the only solution that also works with the steering wheel play/pause/track skip controls.
There seem to be different variants of the same adaptor out there, most have cords, but you need one with just an ipod socket. I'm not sure, but mine is probably a WMA1000.
Here's mine:
