Question Used 2013 XF Pre-purchase Inspection?

Hello,
I'm Gary, and on the brink of purchasing a 2013 XF 3.0.

Car was originally the Jag dealer's loaner car before current owner bought it. It is certified pre-owned and has a 6-year 100K extended warranty until January 2020. The car has 67000 miles on the clock. Read many of your posts regarding XF reliability before even looking at these cars...so thank you! Feel car is priced abit high at $16K as it's the basic package without all the Jag options, but figure it's worth the money with the warranty.

We couldn't complete the deal last night, and I'm glad, because it gives me an extra day to get feedback from the experts. I've scheduled a 1PM appointment tomorrow at the local Jag dealer for a 2-hour inspection of the car before purchase. Car seems fine on test drive, and is clean. I said I wanted an independent Jag mechanic to inspect it. Seller said he hadn't heard good things about that mechanic and suggested instead that I take it to the dealer he bought the car from and where it's been serviced.

Seller gave me the service records (re-typed below). Jag service manager said the car will get a 'visual' inspection for $275. Computer/electronic scans, compression test etc are NOT included. He said those tests were $175 extra each, but probably weren't needed because we'd know if there was a problem due to check engine light, or how the car was running. His description of the "used" car inspection sounded cursory and not as comprehensive as I'd hoped.

My questions are:

a) how critical is this inspection before purchase at only 67000 miles?
b) is it likely to unearth any big issues NOT covered by the extended warranty?
c) Is it OK to trust the dealer rather than an independent?

Apologies for the noob queries, I just need some solid advice. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!!!

March 2016 - 2 year service -- oil change, configured existing powertrain control module
December 2016 - 3 year service -- oil change, brake fluid service, multi-point inspection

April 2017 - Renew Auxiliary battery, 46078, secondary battery internal failure, fund U30046, U30004, B13C592 in GWM, test failed, replace battery, update GWM software, reset BMS modules on secondary and main battery, clear codes, run drive cycle C tested working
November 2017 - Low coolant warning light on, renew expansion tank, pressure test cooling system, 55769, expansion tank sensor, internal issues, sticking tested found coolant is full, replace expansion tank, add coolant, tested working

The CPO warranty is great, had it on my 2010 and now my 2013.

Always covered everything that popped up. (except tires/brakes)

The CPO gives you a great "piece of mind" but with that said, I sold my 10 before the warranty expired and I plan to do the same with my current 13.

As long as the dealer tells you that the car is under coverage and their VIN search does not uncover accidents or other issues that could cause denial of a claim, I think you are safe to proceed.

Thanks, 10 XF Premium!

Out of curiosity, how many miles did you have on your 2010 and how many on your 2013?

Have you had any big problems with either, especially if you're hitting the 100K mark?

Oh, and last question, do you think I should ante up for the dealer inspection first, or trust the service that's been done and assume that tires and brakes are my only liabillity until the warranty ends?

I don't drive much, and probably January 2020 will come around before I hit the 100K, but am curious what's in store for me as far as upcoming maintenance.

I bought my 10 5.0 Premium, it had 35K on it, drove it for 3 years and traded it in at 80K for my 13 5.0SC. It had 1K on it and now 2 years later, has just over 30K.

I would call your future servicing dealer and ask them to check their system against the VIN and give you a full history check.

They will be able to see every time it was serviced and what was done, and how long it was in. Pay attention to any service that took a long time. Might give to insight on problematic issues that could pop back up.

The CPO warrranty will protect your investment as long as there is no hidden accident issues that could cause a future headache.

As far as a pre-inspection, that is your call. If you have a good eye and experiance with buying/fixing used cars, then use your best judgement and save some money.

Hi, 10 XF Premium,

After all that, the seller just called and backed out, saying he'd undervalued the car and wanted another $2K, so I canceled my Jag dealer PPI for this afternoon...easy come, easy go!

Just wanted to thank you for your time and input, it was VERY helpful in helping me to make the decision!
