this item came with my recent purchase of a 2015 XF sport. Cannot find anything about it in the owners manual. Possibly something used in the transport of the car to the dealer? Any info greatly appreciated
Wot he said.
I'm a bit hazy on that particular version though, I suspect it is the AWD version that is used in the engine bay as the "normal" X250 version is in the cabin under the small rectangular trim piece just in front of the armrest lid.
Is yours an AWD?
OZXFR
yes my XF is an AWD version . I can see a similar red strap under the supercharger cover (back right (driver side)) in the engine bay. Unsure why a second one would be loose in the boot when I bought the car but I’ll stick in the spare tire cover just in case. No mention of a transmission release in the owners manual or at least I cannot find one

I suspect if a similar red strap is showing in the engine bay then someone has used the gizmo and left it behind in the engine bay and you now have two of them!
If so I think it might be a good idea to remove the one in the engine bay before you suddenly find you have a box full of neutrals.
And as mentioned earlier it should definitely be in the owner manual under "vehicle recovery" or "towing".
The 2015 XF owners manual has a picture and description but it only mentions the one in the centre console.
The 2016 XF owners manual just says this:
The recovery agent must activate the
Transmission park release before
recovery starts. This procedure is
covered in a separate publication for
service personnel. Failure to activate the
Transmission park release can result in
serious transmission damage.
