XF 3.0 V6 Supercharged 2013 Noise on coldstart
Hello,
I am having some questions regarding the engine, I have looked up on the entire forums and some people said it's perfectly normal since it doesn't have hydraulic lifters, my knowledge is limited but sometimes I have this tick that persists with RPM and getting silent at over 2000 RPM on a cold start, it's like a clicking noise, I wasn't able to the figure out what it was, I had the timing chain set replaced on the car and the supercharger coupler as well and on the last oil change the car did not have any metal in the oil or filter.
The video is quite old but today this morning, I felt like the ticking noise got more pronounced, the car has about 202.000 KM now. The water pump was replaced as well with a HEPU aftermarket new part.
Thank you in advance
Edit: Also one more thing the oil I am currently using is SHELL Helix Ultra Professional AJ-L 0W-20 with the Jaguar Land Rover STJLR 51.5122 specification, I am thinking that the oil might be to thin and this is the main cause. Was thinking to change to Shell Helix Ultra Profession AF 5W-20 with the FORD WSS-M2C948-B oil specification which is compatible with the FORD WSS-M2C925-A. One thing I forgot to mention is that all sound go away after the engine warms up. Also is there a way to quieten the engine down? It's like an orchestra at idle, all types of sounds, it isn't so refined as I expected it to be coming from a 4.2 Supercharged, but over all I am quite happy with the performances it is a very linear and enjoyable engine.

Also this are the oil types that are stated in my owner handbook.
I agree that these DI engines also known as Gas-Diesels or "Giseils" make a lot of noise. I also came from an STR with the very smooth running 4.2L SC V-8. You can't compare those two engines as all the DI ones are just noisier. Can't say I hear anything unusual in your car.
I have a 2014 XJR and swapped to 0W-20 from 5W-20 when Jaguar released the oil bulletin. But your car-your oil.
Yes the engine has mechanical tappets but so did the 4.2L V-8. All the noise is from the DI system with the extreme fuel pressure being switched off and on rapidly. Mine also is much noisier upon cold starting and then quiets down a good bit as it warms up.
Jaguar tried to quiet the engine with those thick rubber pads over the cam covers. Are yours still in place? Also the engine cover has some insulation on it too. Have you removed the engine cover? Some do because of heat reasons. Heck did they replace the thick black rubber covers on the HPFP's when they where replaced? Lot's of stuff making noise on these cars!

Thanks for the reply, when I had the timing chain kit done it did in fact have the rubber pads over the cam covers that you mentioned, they are there and they sit nice and tight. As for the engine cover it is there, but the only thing I am not able to find is some sound insulation, it's just a piece of plastic on mine, as for the High Pressure Fuel Pumps, I did not look there, nor did I replace them. Yeah I noticed that as well that once the car gets to it's running temperatures it quiets down, the only downside I think is that I can hear the engine when I am inside the cabin, I think and most definetly the XF doesn't have the same sound insulation as a XJ, but over all it runs well, the only issue I currently have is a check engine light from the catalyst on the right hand side, but it's intermittent, it goes on and off.
One thing that had me wondering is what is the maximum mileage such an engine can achieve? I saw that the 5.0 goes up to 500.000-800.000 KM with proper care.
I even looked up on some videos with F-Types, F-Pace and RR's with the same engine and they still are loud as hell. I received my supercharger bearings a few days ago, I will replace them and maybe it quietens down even more after it, since I had the coupler replaced the supercharger makes the classing stones in a tin can sound, but no loud clunk on shutdown.
Also maybe it might be to much to ask, but could you post a video with the sound your engines makes? Thank you in advance.
