Anyone know the output on the alternator for a 2010 XFR? Thinking about upgrading my sub amp but don't want to over power the charging system.

 

150 amps, per page 1910 of my copy of the 2010/2011 XFR Workshop Manual:

On 5.0L V8 vehicles (naturally aspirated and supercharger), the charging system consists of a 150 Amp output generator and regulator assembly. The generator and regulator assembly generates electrical power for the vehicle electrical system and maintains the battery in a charged state.
When the engine is running the generator produces an alternating current, which is converted to a direct current internally. The output from the generator is controlled by the voltage regulator (located inside the generator) and then supplied to the battery
through the main battery positive cable. The generator is mounted on the front right side of the engine and driven at approximately 3 times engine speed by the accessory drive belt."

Didn't find anything under "alternator", coz the sneaky buggers have called it a "generator"!

 

OZ, you'll find this funny, but I had an intuition that you would be the first to answer. Must be that we're twins

 

Well you did post up in what is the middle of the day for me but I'm guessing is the wee hours for USA and Canada!

 

Did have that in the back of my mind as well.

 

If you want to go to a high amperage (250 or 320 amp) I have a shop I've been dealing with for about 12 years up in Yucaipa. The can rebuild your stock alt to this spec. I have their 250 amp (145amp @ idle) large case GM alt on my truck, and had their 200amp units on the G35 and Z28.
250 is more than enough power for your needs. You'll need to run an additional + cable off the back of the alt (gives the same effect of running heavier gauge wire) to the main power block in the engine compartment or to the batt.

 

Good to know but I should be fine with 150a for the most part.

 

Yeah, 1800 continuous watts of audio will shake the car welds apart anyway!

 

It would also turn my subwoofer box into a fire pit. Although the amp I bought is 1500 Watts... At least it's digital so it's a lot more efficient than the class A/B 900 watt amp I have now. Will put it in this weekend and see how it goes.

 

I'd do capacitors before an alt anyways.

 

I already have one 1 farad installed and have another if needed.

Make sure they replace the voltage regulator if it's a rebuild or upgrade of your alt.
