Default How high should Oil Sump temp get? Mine seems too high...

5.0 supercharged....I was looking at live data on a scan tool and the car had been cranked while cold then had been running about 20 minutes, coolant and oil temps normal and around 200f, oil level is full with correct weight full synthetic....BUT I saw the oil sump temp was passing 250ish and I immediately shut it off. I let it cool down to below 100f and cranked it again, it got back up to 220f and climbing pretty quick so shut it off again.

Can anyone confirm what temps they see for the sump? Is this normal? How hot does the sump get???

Also, does anyone know exactly where this sensor is and could anything be affecting it and making it abnormally high?

I appreciate any experience or knowledge any of you may have about this....THANKS!

Normal engine oil temp is around 230 to 260 farenheit. Synthetic oil can tolerate a fair bit higher.

Oil is working hard and can run up to 350F quite safely. Mobil 1 up to 500F.

As far as I can tell there is only one oil temperature sensor and it is located in the oil level sensor in the bottom of the oil sump pan. The Jaguar Service Manual suggests that the normal temperature range for the oil temperature sensor is -40F to + 320F. My NA 5.0 engine usually shows oil temperature in the 220F to 250F range, while the coolant shows 186F-205F.

Modern engines run extremely hot for marginally increased efficiency, at the expense of longevity.

The 4.2 engines seem to last well if properly maintained.

Running hot is partly for emissions reduction & improved MPG I think.

Also MUCH better for the engines to run that hot! Keeps the oil water free and that is the temperature the engine was designed to run at.
Helps keep it cleaner inside.
Kinda like the difference between short and long drives. Short drives are car killers while highway miles are nice and easy on the car. Everything is warm and up to temperature.
