Default XFR very weird rattle/ticking (not timing or S/C)

Hi guys,

I'm Nick from the Netherlands and proud owner of a 2010 XFR. I've spent a lot of time and money on preventative maintenance and the car runs great but developed a really weird ticking noise that has both my mechanic and the local jag specialist stumped.

the sound is only heard with warm engine, cold starts are as silent as the AJ133 gets. I first heard it driving through my neighbourhood with the windows down, echoing of parked cars. It's only heard from 1000 to 1500rpm (idle is silent) and seems much more pronounced on accel then decel.

It's not coming from the top or front of the engine, it sounds like the lower rear part and is heard more under the car. It's a little offbeat and intermittent in nature, but quite loud. We probed around with stethoscopes on every single part of the engine and its impossible to pin down. We also checked the flexplate bolts for good measure. I'm truly stumped.

If anyone has encountered this before, please help.

One video is my own (inside garage). I found a second video on youtube of the exact same sound walking under the car. (sadly no answer).

Honestly hard to tell - my suspicion would be a failing high-pressure fuel pump, not sure you'd be able to tell if it's either of those with a stethoscope because they're very loud anyway. There's a way with SDD + cable (or the higher-end OBDII service tools like my Autel) to run a test on the fuel pumps where it will disable each one in turn at idle to rule it out.

Thanks for the reply Dave. The HPFPs were my first suspect as soon as I heard the noise coming from under the car, but like I said: me, a jag specialist and my mechanic have all 3 probed every item on the engine with a stethoscope and cant find it. The HPFPs sound healthy and as you are under the car, you can hear the sound is coming from elsewhere too.

Seems to have a very strong resemblence of the coyote mustang "BBQ" tick.
