Hi guys, I'm new here. I have a 2002 XJ8 that I suspect needs an ABS module repair. Lights on dash, etc. Question 1- After un-plugging the two connectors and removing the 4 bolts is there room to get it out without having to dis-connect the brake lines? Question 2- I found "Module Masters" on the web and they say they will fix for about $100, have any of you used their services? Question 3- Will the car be drivable while the module is out? Thank you very much!

 

THere's a thread here in the forum showing how to fix it yourself. The common failure mode is a broken solder joint/s on the lugs that provide power to the ABS pump. Opening the case and resoldering is all that's necessary for the fix.

The solder repair will only fix the C1095 DTC. If you have a front wheel speed sensor link harness fault (or something else) you will still have the MIL illuminated. You really should get the code read before you spend time and money chasing phantom faults. Just ask the module what it thinks is wrong (it will tell you).

Driving with no brakes may be a problem!

 

Actually, you have only disabled the ABS part of the braking system. As long as you tighten the brake lines loosened in removing the module the brakes will work. The valve body and pump motor can be remounted. You will still have all the braking ability you had when the ABS module electronically disabled itself and withdrew from participation.

 

I don't remove the brake lines or open the hydraulic system when I remove the module but I do BEND THE SH** OUT OF THE LINES to gain access to the fasteners and open a gap big enough to sneak it out. DON'T KINK a line but gradual bends are OK. You might have to remove some of the brake line plastic holders to get a gradual bend.

Thanks guys, now I'm starting to get some good usable advice. Like someone said, I am denied access to the links provided, I suppose because I'm new. Anyway I will try to take it somewhere to get the fault code read. When I looked at it, it seemed that (IF) you could sneak the module out without disconnecting the brake lines, then you could send it off for repair and still drive car in meantime. I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that the electronic module was isolated from brake fluid, and only put pressure on/off via solenoids pushing on sort of "mini" brake cylinders for each wheel. Anyway I'll pry my wife out of it and have her drive our pick-up, and take it to NAPA or Advance Auto Parts and see if they can read code. THANKS AGAIN!!

 

NAPA or ADVANCE will probably NOT be able to read the DTCs for the CHASSIS (C codes). You will need PDU,WDS, IDS or Autoenginuity or some proprietary software to read anthing other than P codes.

B body, C chassis and U network codes are not OBDII but are used by the manufacturer for diagnostics.

Shortly, I will taking off the ABS module and resoldering the joints. I have those messages from time to time despite a fully charged battery and clean wheel sensors.
Do I have to remove the brake lines at the ABS pump to remove the module? With a little bit of push and shove and disconnecting some brake line ties I might get away with it.
Having to bleed the brakes would be one less thing to do.

Oops, Thanks for pointing out what I should have read!
Don't fancy going to town on the lines though. If I can move them a little bit with the ties off that secure them to the chassis member. Maybe that will do it. I have bought some Speedbleeders to make the brake bleeding easier.

 

Could someone point me to a link that describes how to clean a wheel/speed sensor for a 98 VDP? I have the trac control & ABS light on. I'd like to clean the sensors first before I pull out the module.

Hi,

I've had the ABD, stability control fault on the car since I bought it and inspired by tails of removing the module and re-soldering the joints, I attempted last night.

Went well, thanks to the pictures etc from the forum, the solder on the connectors looked a little poor, so re-soldered and re-fitted. Unfortunatly, still the light comes on as soon as I start the car. Went for a few mile drive, just the same.

Before, I start going around the sensors, were could I have the codes checked? And what code tells me module, harnes or pump?
