I cannot put more than a gallon or two in the tank, and even that takes 20 minutes. the fuel gauge seems accurate, but the tank simply will not accept more than a bit of fuel, leaving me always almost-empty. this has been going on for weeks so I've tried every combination already of nozzle, timing, etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice or diagnostic insight.

Also, are there any inexpensive scanners to read codes on this car?

 

Have you ran out of gas and then tried to fill the tank? Sounds like something might be blocking the flow of the fuel into the gas tank.

 

I haven't run out and been stranded, but I'm always stuck on almost empty

 

Are you sure the talk is not full and the guage has malfunctioned?

 

I'm prettty sure it's not a full tank because
1. i've driven 100 miles or so and filling from there is still very slow, 10minutes/gallon (i.e. i put in 0.3 gallons, wait 5 minutes, repeat),
2. the rest of the gauges including trip computer and range estimator are all consisitent.

My first guess is that it's a kinked tube or something compromising the vacuum

 

My problem is, there are many more tubes and connections to the jaguar fuel tank than i've ever seen on my previous, less lovely, but simplercars

 

There is an air bypass passage around the upper filler neck that allows air to get out of the tank while filling, check to be sure the passages and pipesare open, or the pump will continue to shut down as the air from the tank tries to go out into the filler nozzle. It thinks gas is going intoit and shuts off. I have heard of many cases of this but no one has ever come back to say how they fixed it.

 

That's a cannister vent valve stuck in the closed position. It is located under the car, on the passenger's side, at the rear of the right charcoal cannister. There is a sticker on it with the part number...and don't blame Lucas for this one either, it's Denso.

NO REPLACE THE PART, ITS CHEAP AND IF IT STICKS OPEN YOULL HAVE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FOR LARGE EVAP SYSTEM LEAK. ITS A CONNECTOR, HOSE CLAMP AND 10MM NUT

 

If this works I'll be very pleased... Merry Christmas

 

I thought I would bring this thread back from the dead as I am having the same issue. So, is it a problem with the EVAP system?

Thanks for the info. I took the canister close valve off of the passenger side charcoal canister and it then would fill up. Looks like the valve was sticking.

i am having the same problem after my mechanic replaced both fuel pumps (car got flooded)...i'll try out the fix and see what happens...

I was having the same problem with my 2002 XJR only filling up to half a tank before it would shut off the fuel flow. I disconnected the vent valve but it didn't seem to have any effect. Is there a next step in this process?

From the TSB (Did you read it?):

SPIT BACK/PREMATURE SHUT-OFF

"Inspect the fuel tank, canister close valve (CCV), and vapor line for damage/restriction or blockage. Check the fuel vapor pipe from the fuel tank (inside the luggage compartment) for any signs of damage. Check under the vehicle where the pipe enters the primary carbon canister, inspect the cross-over pipe from the primary carbon canister to the secondary
carbon canister, and the secondary/canister vent to the CCV, the CCV and pipe to atmosphere for signs of damage.

If no fault is found, substitute the carbon canisters and reassess. High-pressure drop across the carbon canister(s) can be caused by internal damage or saturation of the carbon with liquid fuel. Substitution will verify this fault.

If all the above is OK, then determine whether the customer issue is apparent at the same filling station/pump each time. If so, recommend using an alternative filling station/pump and explain how a worn fuel dispenser nozzle can affect the fuel filling.

If the vacuum port on the fuel dispenser nozzle at the filling station pump is damaged or partially blocked, causing a restriction, the fuel dispenser nozzle will shut off prematurely. If the diaphragm inside the fuel dispenser nozzle is damaged/weak, this can also cause a premature shut-off."

Hi guys,

Okay, so I'm at the point where I'm ready to replace the carbon canisters as the shut-off at half-tank persists when filling, as does the smell of gasoline. As my car has the twin carbon canister system, I'm just trying to determine which ones to buy. I've been scouring eBay, but all of the twin-canister systems I can find have the same part number for both left and right canisters: F5RX-9D656-CB (or CA). There doesn't seem to be a pair with individual designations for left and right, even though I am absolutely certain that mine displays separate part numbers (CB for Right and CA for left).

Does this matter, or are they the same exact same part internally, just with different numbers stamped on the case?

Okay I replaced both of the carbon canisters yesterday and.. no luck. The fuel system is not blocked or damaged and is free of debris, I confirmed the successful operation of the vent valve and now have replaced the carbon canisters... Is there a next step in this process? For the record, I'm not always using the same pump at the same petrol station..
