Default Update on the XJR

I posted a few months ago a video of a strange engine noise. Followed advice of a supercharger bearing being out of whack, removed supercharger and sent it out for repair. turned out to be very out of alignment, the company installed new "lobes" in the supercharger, carried out a refresh on the rest of the unit, and sent it back.

Supercharger has been now been installed, with some new hoses and water pump for about 3 weeks now. car runs well and the newer design (gen 5) supercharger lobes have a subtle but nice whine to them when the sc is at high rpm. The car has gone about 300 miles without any warning lights (except a random asc not avail light-will have to clean wheel sensors etc if that happens again).

I also installed a scanguageII device in the ashtray compartment after reading various posts on this forum about how the factory gauge does not give very good feedback until it is too late.

Pictures are of the old supercharger (sad in my mind that after only 68,000 miles it was like this) , the engine with the supercharger removed, and of the scanguage

thank you to everyone on here for providing such useful and convenient information, doing your own work in my mind is interesting and much cheaper than paying someone else to do it

Good news, I am glad you are happy now
3rd pic, scangauge suggests to me that it should be a cool item ,I first thought it was some sort of Sirius or XM with its thumbnail form

If you don't mind me asking who did you send the SC to for repair? How much did it cost?

PM me if you don't want to respond in the open forum. I'm going to pull the belt on the Super Charger tonight to see what difference it makes, but my wifes car sounds very much like your video. She is also getting several engine codes associated with misfires. P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 P1316.

That sounds like 'A' bank of cylinders mistimed, I'd be inclined to check the secondary timing chain tensioner on that head first.

What year is the car?

sent to magnuson superchargers in california, they have redone their website and I can't find the specific area that discusses rebuilds

Magnuson Products, LLC

found them on eaton's site:

Superchargers

basically you mail them the sc, they take a gander at it to determine what needs to be done, and that determines the price.
back in oct. 2011 their price range was $200-$1000. closer to 200 if you need simpler work like a snout rebuild or bearings or something, closer to 1000 if you need new lobes like I did. because my lobes were grinding on each other and my sc was quite messed up, it was big money. I got the gen 5 lobes from them though so technically it was a slight performance and efficiency increase.

gen 5 are a better design too bad you didnt get the case as well fitting is simple and also a slight bump in efficency over the gen 3 case small bleeds, tighter fit, raised roof etc etc. But nice to hear tht all is good not, as to the roots needing rebuild after 68k tht is not common roots are very robust units known for their longevity.

yeah I was surprised that it was already messed up with such low miles, oh well. the new lobes seem to have a slightly louder whine which is interesting, maybe someday I'll go for a screaming kenne bell
